California health officials are warning people not to eat oysters from a Northern California company because they may be contaminated with bacteria that can make people sick.

In announcing the recall of shucked and in-shell raw oysters from Drakes Bay Oyster Co., the California Department of Public Health said the oysters may be contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a bacteria that can cause vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, headache, fever and chills.

Health officials said most people who get sick from the bacteria recover without treatment in a few days, but severe illness can occur in people suffering from chronic liver disease, cancer, or other conditions that weaken the immune system.

A statement from the Inverness-based company said it initiated a voluntary recall after being notified by state health officials that three illnesses had been linked to its oysters.

The shucked oysters are packaged under the Drakes Bay Oyster Farm label and sold in 9 ounce, 1-pint, 1-quart and half-gallon jars or tubs.

The affected shucked products are labeled with lot numbers 363 through 421. The lot number can be found on the top label of each jar or tub. The in-shell raw oysters are sold individually or in bags ranging in size from 1 dozen to 10 dozen. In-shell raw oyster tags are marked with harvest dates ranging from July 17, 2012, through Aug. 8, 2012.

One of my worst cases of food poisoning came from oysters. And i thought all oyster companies would be using high pressure processing by now to help prevent this

Still love the slimy little fuckers

Same here. Had a few bad oysters from Hog Island Oyster Bar in the Ferry Building several years ago, had to take four days off of work and a few trips to the urgent care center. I won't go into details, but it was ugly...

Since then, I've been a bit more cautious about eating oysters, usually only a few at a time. Unless they're farmed oysters. Last week my GF bought 100 oysters from Tomales Bay, and within 24 hours we had eaten all of them (raw). :laughing
