Dogs on motorcycles.

Hi, my name is Manny and I had a question that I did a search for and I didn't find any guidance on.

I was wondering if it is legal to have a dog on a motorcycle.

If it is ok to take a dog on a motorcycle, what method do you suggest?

My bike ninja 500
My dog is a 14 lbs pug

My intent is to have small rides with her mainly to dog parks.

Any input would be appreciated,

Gracias.

Don't know about the legality, but the other day at the Wall I saw a guy go by with what looked like a smaller German Shepard in a open-top plastic tub... I've also seen a full-size pet carrier strapped to the back of a bike... and a girl on the back of a scooter with a harley helmet that looked like a dog...

I know a cop who rides with her dog in the tank bag. She and her dog are both really cool too. :ride

I already got Mina her doggles and I've been looking for leathers! Would you mind asking where he/she got the leathers for the dog? Thanks!

Naw. A cotton bib. I think he should be wearing the personal water floatie for dogs (as it's yellow and he'll bounce better if it comes to that). His owner said she was going to make him a moto helmet -- out of leather. I should take another picture of him ATGATT.

In the April issue of Motorcyclist, the gear section is all about dog-related equipment. Might want to check it out.

As for the legally, there is nothing in CA law that regulates this at this time. I heard there is legislation pertaining to securing pets in moving vehicles. I don't know if there will be specific or general restrictions for motorcycles as a result of this pending legislation.

I know I see waaaay too many dead dogs on the side of the freeway and I also had a cat jump out the window of a moving car when I was a teenager. The cat wore down his claws and had some abrasions on his pads, but luckily I was only going about 25 when he leaped out the window.

Do a search for "Dogs on Bikes"
There is an annual dog ride in Oakland too... try this site:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biker_Dogs_Motorcycle_Club

I have a couple of Poms that ride. I use a 4 point soft harness (like the Puppia soft harness). I also have doggles for both dogs and they always wear them when we are in motion. Go to http://www.doggles.com for more details.

Then, I secure them in a sling bag from Outward Hound. I could fit both dogs in 1 bag, but we use one bag for each dog. I get mine on eBay for around $25 (delivered).

So, you need to get the go used to wearing the doggles. It can be difficult and you need to be consistent. I don't make (or let) the dogs wear them while walking around and I don't let them remove them. So, When I am carrying them around in my arms or in a bag, they wear them. I remove them after a short time. Start with a few minutes and add time a little at a time. Get them used to the harness. Once you are all good with those.. we started with short trips in the car, like Starbucks or returning videos. Then we put them on the motorcycle for short trips and now the ride for hours with no problems.

It is best to start when they are very young (12 weeks old?) so it is second nature. It is more difficult to get an older dog dialed in with the new environment, but it can be done.

One tip is to put a small (favorite) toy in the bag with them. Bring a few small milkbones to distract them if they start to get upset. I found small dogs do better with a lightweight baby blanket, particularly for long trips. After a while on the freeway, they will hibernate and get under the blanket and sleep, then pop their heads out when we slow down at an exit.

If you have any other questions, post them here.

As to dogs in moving vehicles, isn't there a CA law that requires any dog kept in the bed of a pickup truck be harnessed/tethered in?

Ask and ye shall receive. :p

Carrying Animal in Motor Truck

23117. (a) No person driving a motor vehicle shall transport any animal in the back of the vehicle in a space intended for any load on the vehicle on a highway unless the space is enclosed or has side and tail racks to a height of at least 46 inches extending vertically from the floor, the vehicle has installed means of preventing the animal from being discharged, or the animal is cross tethered to the vehicle, or is protected by a secured container or cage, in a manner which will prevent the animal from being thrown, falling, or jumping from the vehicle.

(b) This section does not apply to any of the following:

(1) The transportation of livestock.

(2) The transportation of a dog whose owner either owns or is employed by a ranching or farming operation who is traveling on a road in a rural area or who is traveling to and from a livestock auction.

(3) The transportation of a dog for purposes associated with ranching or farming.

Added Ch. 224, Stats. 1987. Effective January 1, 1988.

Note that this only pertains to areas where cargo would normally be hauled (ie: p/u truck bed).* Perhaps the legislation MM4L is referring to applies to animals inside passenger vehicle (or motorcycles) also. I know my little dog gets rocked around in my SUV if I have to swerve/brake hard.

* See my note in post #25 below. ~MM4L

Recently saw a tank bag style dog carrier in a magazine and somebody on svrider.com rides with a dog in the back in a basket.

So where are the pictures of your Pommies, MM4L?
I don't have any on this computer. Sorry. Maybe I can scrounge one up at home.

One section that may actually apply would be:

CVC 21700. No person shall drive a vehicle when it is so loaded, or when there are in the front seat such number of persons as to obstruct the view of the driver to the front or sides of the vehicle or as to interfere with the driver's control over the driving mechanism of the vehicle.

This section would apply in a case where you have a large dog positioned so as to obstruct your view or control, like a bag mounted on the tank. It would be up to the officer's opinion as to whether they felt it was a violation, but if you had an accident as a result of the dog being on your bike, this would be the appropriate section to use as a factor in the collision.

But, since you asked.. the current law pertaining to securing animals in vehicles required CROSS-TETHERING and in looking at it more closely, I believe it could be applied to motorcycles, like if you took the lid off of a cargo container or trunk on the back of your bike:

CVC 23117.

(3) The transportation of a dog for purposes associated with ranching or farming.

Use your imagination.. in a space intended for load. Hmmm.. yeah, I could see that being an easy cite if you had a crate attached to the back of a bike. A good reason to keep them within the passenger area. But, make sure they cannot interfere with your view or control!!! :thumbup

The other applicable section would be 597a of the CA Penal Code (Animal Cruelty/Transport). It is the applicable section pertaining to inhumane transportation of animals with motor vehicles. I don't see where this section would by applicable without some harm or suffering involved.

PC 597a. Whoever carries or causes to be carried in or upon any vehicle or otherwise any domestic animal in a cruel or inhuman manner, or knowingly and willfully authorizes or permits it to be subjected to unnecessary torture, suffering, or cruelty of any kind, is guilty of a misdemeanor; and whenever any such person is taken into custody therefor by any officer, such officer must take charge of such vehicle and its contents, together with the horse or team attached to such vehicle, and deposit the same in some place of custody; and any necessary expense incurred for taking care of and keeping the same, is a lien thereon, to be paid before the same can be lawfully recovered; and if such expense, or any part thereof, remains unpaid, it may be recovered, by the person incurring the same, of the owner of such domestic animal, in an action therefor.

I think dogs on bikes are cute, but I hate seeing owners put their dogs at grave risk of injury and don't think it is cool.

You or I wear leathers, helmet, gloves etc.

The dog does not. What do you think happens to the dog in a crash? Do you want to get up from a crash, uninjured but with helmet ruined, gloves and jacket destroyed, and see your dog missing 30% of its fur and skin from a sliding abrasion, and with an impact injury that has partially crushed your loved creature's skull and destroyed an eye? Do you feel comfortable with that? Do you have the eocnomic means to pay the vet bill? Do you want to hold your bleeding destroyed dog in your lap on the trip to the vet?

Exactly why I would never take my dog on a ride. I worry enough about what would happen to him in a car accident since he is unrestrained in the passenger compartment. An airbag deployment would likely kill him. No way I'm taking him on a motorcycle ride...

About a month ago, I saw a guy in Pleasonton on a Rune, with a dog in a courier type bag. Was pretty cool looking.
