Well, I thought I was doing good, feeding Gomer a 5-star rated dog food that wasn't a million dollars (although still pretty pricey). He eats it with no fuss, poops normal, looks great.

Then come to find out that like half the ingredients are being investigated by the FDA for links to canine heart disease, specificly dilated cardiomyopathy.

Gomer is an active dog who loves to RUN. We take him to the bird club where he will go nonstop for 2-3 hours on end. Doesn't really have any fat to speak of. Also, we pick up every turd he drops so we want those to be healthy, too. So naturally we try to give him the best fuel we can. I'm thinking about switching from what we were feeding to this Dr Tim's stuff since the ingredients seem sound and there's none of the suspected heart-killing ones.

Anyway, what are you feeding your mutts?

What are you feeding him now?

My work dog (Malinois) gets Natural Balance Chicken and Sweet Potato. Our two pets (both large mixed breed) get Firstmate Lamb.

The Firstmate is pretty pricey at $73 per bag, but Natural Balance is pretty reasonable at $59 per bag. I’ve tried a few different foods for the Mal and his body digests this one the best of the brands I’ve tried.

My wife was a manager for Pet Food Express for a few years and still works on-call. If you have any specific questions about a dog food, feel free to PM me and I can get her input.

We've been feeding Canidae Grain Free Pure Sky. It was available locally at an independent pet supply store that we love with a buy 12 get one free deal. At about $3.50/lb it was not super cheap, but way better than Orijen or Acana or some of those other insane brands. I'm going to talk to the owner of the store tomorrow about that Dr Tim's stuff. If your wife knows anything about it I'd be glad to hear it :thumbup

She doesn’t know about the Dr. Tim food, but she did say that Natural Balance was bought by a parent company and will be having an ingredient change. Pet Food Express plans to stop carrying it. She suggested not switching to that.

I’ll probably switch to Nulo with my Mal’s next bag.

Haven't fed my dog food from a bag in over a year. I just don't trust them anymore. I cook my dog's meals in the instant pot now.

Here was last week's batch. 2lbs of chicken thighs, 2 bags of mixed frozen veggies, 1 cup of rice, some chicken broth in the Instant Pot for 12 minutes. No seasoning. Little dude loves it.

me too, but for about 1/2 of my dog's meals. the other 1/2 is natural balance

I vary the recipe, and add whatever leftover raw meats I may have. the usual:
3 lb ground turkey
carrots
peas
potatoes (reg or sweet)
celery

she goes apeshit for it

I supplement the JFFD meals with pretty much this (sans insta pot). Grated carrots, chopped broccoli, green beans, rice, protein.

Dang, that sucks about Natural Balance. It's the first food I've found that doesn't give my dog gastrointestinal distress or face itchiness. Does the missus have any suggestions for food similar to the natural balance limited ingredient stuff?

There's still talks aobut Nestle' buying out Champion Pet Food(Orijen/Acana) the 1st quarter this year.

If that happens, i'll be switching up immediately. My pets are small, so the added cost isn't huge for Orijen.

She thinks my Mal will do well on Nulo, which is also limited ingredient. It should be priced similarly.

The good thing about Pet Food Express is they will accept almost any return on a bag of dog food. If your pooch has a bad reaction, just bring it back and they will refund it. That gives you a little freedom to try new food.

They also accept food bought from other stores and will donate it to shelters etc.

we have a local ma and pa pet food store that is a bit expensive but I like to shop at these types of places if possible.

I also called them up when I was gathering donations for victims of the camp fire. they gave me a shopping cart full of dog/cat fud and litter.

good people.

Not as fast as I look.
Taste of the Wild. Various flavors. Nutros Lamb and Rice got too pricy and these boys showed up at the right time. I always read labels. Impressive.

The dog stools are small and firmer. Can't beat that. It means they are utilizing more of the ingredients. Two active and two older sedentary terriers. Seems to work for all of them.
