Dirt bikes for kids?

Any advice where to look for kids' dirt bikes? My kids are 9 and 11 and I'd like to get bikes for them "soon-ish" - do some camping and riding this summer.

I looked for bikes on craigslist but didn't find much. Any other place to look online? Any dealers in the east bay that have reasonably priced used bikes that would be worth looking at?

Also wouldn't mind your thoughts on decent bikes to consider, XR100, KLX110, CRF80, XR650R? (just seeing if anyone is paying attention)

thanks
Bill

The problem is that Craigslist went to paid postings.

There use to be a ton of affordable for bikes, but when they want 5 dollars for something that isn’t too much more expensive that’s a large profit margin. As soon as CL went to payment posts for cars, a large majority of 1000 dollar civics and ford rangers stopped being posted. Maybe it’s the demographics of people who are selling, but I honestly can’t blame them. Now it’s all dealer ads because they write it all off. (Though other sections like the batter sections may have what you want)

Most traffic went the way of the online phone apps but you can search them online.
Try Offer up and Let go.

I wouldn't put those apps on my phone.

Facebook Marketplace has been my go-to for a few years now. If you're worried about privacy, just create a fake Facebook account.

get something with electric start. It will be sooooo much less stress on everyone.

Yes, <insert bike here> is easy to kick start even for a little kid BUT throw in the chaos, panic, and tears of when they dump it out of your line of sight and it becomes not so easy to kick it over anymore. One less thing to worry about.

Start with a bike that fits the kid and NOT a bike they can grow into.

Too big of a bike gets in the way of learning.

I also suggest sending the kid(s) to MSF dirtbike School (DBS) that is offered at Hollister Hills and other locations.

As a riding instructor, I have found that the parent-child relationship often gets in the way of learning AND parents don't always teach very well. Just because you know how to ride, does not mean you can teach someone how to ride... I admit I am biased since I am an instructor.

Look on Craigslist up towards Tahoe - Reno CL maybe? Much more there than on Bay Area/SF...

Sorry, but I had to laugh along with your post... but my case was quite the opposite experience. I bought an electric start TTR125 for my daughter for exact reasons you mention. However the chaos, panic, and tears happened shortly after we arrive at the riding area as she realized she forgot to bring the key. My response was to hand here a 10mm socket wrench and teach her how to quickly remove the tank and unplug the ignition... thus converting her bike to kick start so that she could ride it. We eventually just left it in that state and she became good at kick starting it. The chaos and tears come quickly, but just as quickly the tears dry up and kids learn to adapt.
