smaller finish (800x600) - Copy.jpg

I finally extricate my story off of facebook and come back to the dear old BARF. BARF is where my tripping drug all began. Little did I think after 8 years, 8 motorcycles and 100,000 mostly solo miles I would still have a fire burning to venture out and find small lines on a map that have encompassed diverse California, tumbleweeds in Nevada, flattened snakes and bunnies in Oregon, pot-bellied donkeys in Utah and farmland in Idaho. These journies are better than many dates I have been on .

MapOverview.jpg

I will try not to be too long winded and cover the basics. :teeth

You see, it is hard for me to sit still without thinking about journeying somewhere as each journey unfolds a great chapter of life. My journey wouldn't be a journey without sharing it with others, at BARF meets and, right on this forum of motorcycle enthusiasts who may dream of going on a trip or are trepid about taking that first step. However, the people you meet on the road are well worth the adventures. Lesson number 1, go for it ! Life is unpredictable. Enjoy each breath, each sunrise, sunset and those you love.

It is not the miles covered in a quick pace nor at night for who knows what scenery may be missed. I go for however long I feel the energy and take breaks when needed. (However, 1,000 mile Ironbutts tell a different story...)

So, to begin, my story takes place over 5 days with a sketch of a plan. The rough sketch was- get to Idaho and visit a friend. Ah, first part of planning done. The rest ? I am a go with the flow

Tough to see the roads too well on your map, but looks like you are going through some bidding stuff east of bend. Just north of that is fossil, antelope, and some epic roads. Wouldn't add to many miles and would take away some borring roads. Just one opinion. Love the adventure spirit though! Have fun.

That looks like a spotwalla map, so I'd say the trip is already done. :)

Sweet... Eager to see/hear, this... :thumbup If you haven't done the Columbia river gorge, I'd highly recommend pushing your route north, to include the gorge and Mt Hood and Washington park in Portland... Rose Garden.

And if the available time allows... In the Gorge, you're passing Carson, Washington side. It has an old hotel with a bath house..
You don't have to be checked into the hotel for the bath house. OMG what a soak in such a huge tub..:thumbup And in the gorge... Old scenic hwy.. Past the string of waterfalls....:thumbup :thumbup

If Bend is as far North as you go... there is a Volano/lake (not National park like Crater Lake) just South and tiny bit east, of Hwy 97, Bend..
That has a lodge where a canoe can be rented and paddle that out on the lake that has such clean/clear water... That looking over the edge of the canoe.. To the bottom of the lake, is like there is no water, You must be floating on air, to see that bottom so clearly.

I decided to leave after work on Thursday evening July 23rd and slog the 3 hour cooler evening highway miles and make it to Redding. That way my morning didn't have to start out with bay area commute congestion .

The Quality Inn in Redding I had picked wasn't so quality as there were vagrants, drunk people and the location was dimly lit. It had to do for 10pm at night. RRRggh! I studied the map that evening to figure out what route I was going to take tomorrow. My real plan was to go to Winnemucca up97 but the freak snow shower a couple days prior over Donner had me change my already loose plans.

The next morning the news in the breakfast room covered the new theatre shooting. Breakfast-goers mouths were agape. What the heck are we feeding ourselves mentally for breakfast these days !! ACK !

On with the show where the highway became littered more with pine tree scenery and less fossil- fuel burning machines. Highway 5 split and I took 97.
Upon looking in my rear view mirror I spotted a wonderful sight!

I carried on North and decided I had time for stopping at Crater Lake and took highway 62. I was not thoroughly sure of my time frame but I did it anyway for how often to I get up in this neck of the woods ?

Dang, was I SO GLAD I did. It was a $10 dollar entrance fee. The views inside the crater and , to me more so, out from the crater were phenomenal ! I ran the highway on the east side of the crater only and stopped for a break. I ended up chatting with 3 Harley guys who came down from Canada. They had just ran the Dragon the day prior in Idaho. My next stop for a picture at the rim I spoke to a Harley couple who just came the 4,200 mile circuitous route from Maine. His wife rode on the back and had a pacemaker but she seemed happy as a clam. Great for her !

I realized it was near noon and I had some miles to cover and get to Boise. I had stated to my friend I'd be there by 7 pm. Oy !

I took 138 East to hit 97. The highway was a straight two lane road and people wanted to pass the fire trucks in crazy form! Again, life is about the journey for me, no need to speed there.

I hit 97 and headed North. 97 produced smells of freshly cut trees. Cedar being a main fragrance that came to mind. The highway was relatively straight again and uneventful two lane road. I took this to Bend and headed East on 20. Welcome the high desert. Only 1 picture was taken in all these miles. Most miles looked the same and it was similar to the road to Hawthorne, Nevada. This was a lonely stretch with miles of desert scrub.

20.jpg

The 'end' of highway 20 was met by about 15 miles of undulating sweepers by the stout-flowing river. The hills which bracketed the river were browny-sunday colored covered with golden caramel drizzled about. Quite the welcome change of scenery before I hit Boise. I arrived at my friends house at 10:30 that evening.

Total miles that day were 633.

second this, as we did crater lake, orgegon coast, through portland and the columbia river gorge en route to boise by car (with the little one) a few weeks back.

highly want to go back on two wheels, though i'd prefer a better ride for that distance.
