I imagine he meticulously cleans it afterwards.

My Mom has a coal stove for heat in a place she was renting. That thing was plain awful. Coal dust everywhere. Horrible thing.

But this video reminds me of this quote I heard. "The steam locomotive is the largest machine with all of the moving parts on the outside."
