Converting videos from .mov to other format or lower .mov quality

Long story, but I am trying to lower the quality or change file types to Windows type from .mov iPhone format. The laptop that is trying to play the original .mov files is struggling and a new laptop is not in the cards. Laptop is a Lenovo and is about 6-7 years old.

Is there freeware that can convert the files or lower the quality of the video so they will play on an older laptop? I have about 30 videos I would like to do this to.

There are some free sites that will do it for you but some demand money if you don't want a water mark or just the first 10 seconds. I can't remember the one that worked for me but if I google "convert video online free" then this one comes up as one I've visited at some point.

It takes maybe up to an hour then they email you with a link to download.

I download the windows codec for windows media player from download.com
after that window movie maker will recognize .mov and will be able to make avi from them
