Coast Ridge Rd off Nacimiento_Ferguson in Big Sur

The Koi Father

Snap Roll
Anybody got experience with the Coast Ridge Road area in Big Sur? On a sport tour ride last year using Nacimiento-Ferguson Rd spotted the exit signs and roads. As a Jeep enthusiast also, they stood out. Anyone explored the area? The views like on Nacimiento-Ferguson I gotta figure make it worthwhile alone.:wow

Great road for your Jeep or KLR. Not sure how it is this time of year... we did it in the fall. I would expect ruts, maybe some mud, depending on how long its been since the last rain.

I think that would be a good destination for an overnight camping excursion. There are some campgrounds there. But I'd suggest waiting til after winter, so the weather is nicer and there are more daylight hours.

I've considered it in the past but still haven't gotten around to it. Here is what I came up with a while back as a possible route. Campgrounds are at B, C and D.

Assuming you are talking about the road that turns off at Bixby bridge and goes down to Andrew Molera. We through there a couple weekends ago in my grocery getter SUV (Acura MDX) if that gives you any indication of difficulty. There were definitely ruts from the rains but shouldn't be hard to pick a line through unless you are on a sport bike. There is one rocky switch back that may be tricky if you do it south to north but again not real difficult. Saw a guy go through in his VW hippy van. Nice views on the ridge, there's a big ranch up there and lots of private property posts, but the road itself is a public road.

I rode this area a couple of weeks ago with a group from the South Bay Riders forum, and it was a lot of fun. I did it on a WR250R, but there were also plenty of bigger adventure bikes as well. We did the route that Alex mentioned above - started at Bixby Bridge then dumped out on Hwy 1 at Molera. Then we rode south and did a variety of roads down by Mill Creek, Plasket, and Gorda. Here are the tracks that we more or less explored.

The south part alone is a day worth of riding and exploring. It was a Saturday and Hwy 1 was busy with tons of people pulling in and out of beaches and lookout points. By the time we got back to Bixby Bridge, there were so many people parked there I could barely load up my bike and get out of there!

That's Old Coast Road. Coast Ridge is down below Lime Kiln. See the route I linked to above, it covers both.

User ToxicMark ( http://bayarearidersforum.com/forums/member.php?u=43772 ) invited me to ride this last year. I wasn't able to go but he has done it a few times. PM him and tell him to put his experiences here. I may join you if I am free.

I've done Old Coast Rd a few times and same with N-F Rd, but I have yet to take Hwy 1 to N-F Rd via Coast Ridge Rd. My perfect loop yet to be ridden includes that then down into Fort Hunter Liggett and up 101 to Gonzales until I hit Gloria/La Gloria Rd. Take La Gloria which turns into dirt and connect to 25 just north of Pinnacles and then head through Hollister to get back to the Bay.

If you head south on Hwy 1 and take Old Coast at Bixby Bridge until it spits you back out on Hwy 1, Keep going south a bit more until you hit the Big Sur Taphouse and order some carnitas tacos. You'll thank me.

I rode this on my DR650 in April and it was a blast. It's pretty easy (I'd only been riding for three months when I went). You can camp on NF road without permits or anything - just find a place off the road and set your chocks.

Here's a boring video of the section of coast road that I rode when I did this in June last year. There's some nice dirt roads north west of fort Hunter Ligett that I attempted to do but they were closed due to fire when I went up there. It was fun and easy while it lasted. I wrote about it in my Death Valley ride report. Its called Indian road. Then there's Cone peak and prewitt ridge, lotsa fun places around there and camping. Watch out for the flies though.
