CMRA mock race TWS 3/18/16 CRASH!

Near Miss Racing #96
I was there. I mean, right there and by my count the bike was revved for at least 30 seconds before this happened. For a moment I even thought they were going to call it off... but on the other hand the comments around me was "this is going to be good" and it was. :) I'm glad no one got seriously hurt!

that guy will never forget that Launch Control is not actually Clutch Control.

already heard that the guy he hit was fine

I remember my first "mock race" during a Keigwins 2-day school. One of the first things they talked about was how to launch a bike. That was not the recommended method.

Srs bz, isn't that what launch control is supposed to do? Pull the clutch pin the throttle, and when you dump the clutch the computer does the rest?

And obviously not quite 'pin' the throttle, but what is launch control if not to assist on drag-race starts? Or was it revved too high?

:dunno

Nope, you still need to feather and feed the clutch in initially. It's there to tell the computer to be more aggressive with the traction control due to not having any wheel speed to calculate off of and to limit throttle input a bit so you aren't just going straight to 12 once you're underway... but an 8k rpm dump will get you to 12 or 1 o'clock before the bike can do anything.

nope. +1 to Phanuel

the clutch is not computer controlled nor is there a sensor to determine how engaged the clutch is. so there is no way for the computer to reduce power enough to prevent the bike from looping it when a rider dumps the clutch. u must still slip the clutch.

cars that have launch control have computer controlled clutches or are automatics. so the car will really just launch by getting off the brake.

this is why some GP riders still get better starts than others, even though the software is all the same now. there is still skill needed with the left hand.

This is true for many, but not all cars. I have driven a couple that have had regular, common, normal clutches.

From reading around on the LC my bike has, dumping the clutch tends to just bog the engine down and give you a completely shit launch.

If you don't use the LC and dump the clutch, then you'll loop it since you're giving it full throttle instead of the tamed throttle the LC gives it (and you can rev it an additional 5k rpm).

if u dump the clutch, what do those cars do?

Spin the wheels for an instant, then hook-up and take off. EDIT: One was a supercharged 4cyl and it needed modulation to avoid bogging a bit, the other was a V8 and it just took off.

a real dump like this guy? it really seems like his hand slipped off the lever, esp since he went early.

i havent read a single first hand account of someone getting good launches w/ OEM LC. the few guys i raced last weekend with it or aftermarket systems couldnt out-launch me either. they def arent ez to use.

makes sense, thnx.

I mean, I could go try it out after work, but I don't want to go have to find a ride from SJ to PH and then source new plastics...

My buddy had a 2012 Challenger SRT8 6 speed. When I drove it, I couldn't figure out why the car would not get sideways. Even from a dig, it would chirp the tires and then squat and go. Hard shifts from 1-2 and 2-3 had the same result.

Turns out there are 2 levels of traction control. Hold the button down for like 10 seconds and you get the analog experience.
