Climbing Gyms/Planet Granite

Peachy!
Do any of you sinkers climb at Planet Granite in the Presidio? I bought a Groupon for a one month membership and just did my belay lesson tonight.

It seems fun but a little weird to either have to coordinate going with someone or wait for another person who needs a partner. People who are climbing in a group seem to do a lot of standing around...I'm just not sure it will wind up being worth the pricey monthly membership. Also, Marina people :nchantr

Anyway, I'm going to be hanging out there for the next month so let me know if you want a climbing buddy or if you want to try it out :teeth

Yep, they do. I know I can use the bouldering area without a partner but I wanna strut around in a climbing harness too! :)

Do they give classes at any of those? Any kind of structured "this is how you get better" kinda stuff? I have a habit of relying on my upper body strength too much when I climb there :(

Bouldering master race. It's way more fun than TR to me. I'm in Glen park too if you're interested in bouldering out there or Ocean beach if you're interested in local partner for outdoors. The hours I go to PG are too early for you probably and I only do bouldering but it is worth TR if you have a constant partner.

hey momo-san.. I'm interested! I'll see if I can meet up

I don't know if bouldering has changed recently, but I think it's usually not recommended unless you climb 5.9 already. Somehow, if you just got a belay class you're probably not climbing that... or?

I've climbed at Planet Granite a few times, but I prefer the Touchstone gyms. At any of the gyms, you usually don't have to wait too long to find a belay partner if you don't already have one. And as someone mentioned, bouldering is another fun way to go. No reason you can't start climbing V0 and V1 bouldering routes right at the start.

^ way to point out the obvious.

seriously tho, even if you show up and go bouldering, 9 times outta 10 you meet people who are down to do some top roping. its a good way to meet people and get started in the sport.

though, i haven't been to planet granite, so the people there might suck. I know what that is like, i rarely climb at vertex in Santa Rosa because of the people. I climb at rock zilla in napa, and its awesome. meet someone new all the time.

Alright, how many of you pervs read this as a grope-on? :laughing

I get that for free whenever I go to a barf meet.

I'll start off bouldering in the gym before trying in the real world. Won't your sister get jealous if you start hanging out with other girls :laughing

Right on! PM on it's way...I have only climbed halfway up an easy wall. I really have no idea what I'm doing, but I can tie my ropes, don my harness and belay. I will try to have one of the staff show me around the bouldering area.

God, I have a bit more money now. And maybe some time. I need to get back into climbing.

Yeah, bouldering is where it's at these days. They have these huge pads that people carry with them to mitigate the risk of falls on hairy or exposed problems. I'll probably spend most of my time bouldering if/when I start going to a rock gym. But, having cut my teeth climbing at Joshua Tree, I gotta say, there's something about a nice long climb.

Leading or top roping, it's a different kind of rush. Topping out on a really hard problem ten feet off the ground is nice. But being two rope lengths up a sheer rock face, even if it's only a 5.7 rated climb, is pretty exhilarating.

Went to Joshua Tree last year. My hands/fingers were tore up for weeks.

I'm not sure if Walk On the Wild Side is still the longest route in JTree, but it's a really classic climb and a nice intro to exposed lead climbing.
