I got his social media posts saying he doesn’t his fans to watch his show anymore because the HBO and Netflix companies don’t want to pay him for it. How is it possible for HBO not pay him? Do you think his fans will obey his request?

Dave Chapelle is a brilliant and troubled individual but so are the people that run HBO and Netflix.
Capitalism can be a bitch sometimes.

I don't understand. Did someone pay him for the rights to his show and he's unhappy how/when/where they're choosing to air the show?

Comedy Central and its parent company, ViacomCBS, own the rights to Chappelle’s Show. And in his new act, Chappelle reveals that when he signed the contract with Comedy Central at age 28, he had no job and a baby on the way.

“People think I made a lot of money from Chappelle’s Show,” he says. “When I left that show, I never got paid. They didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract. But is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me. Perfectly legal ‘cause I signed the contract.”

Ha, welcome to America. Found this on wiki...

During a June 2004 stand-up performance in Sacramento, California, Chappelle left the stage due to audience members interrupting the show by shouting, "I'm Rick James, bitch!," which became a catchphrase from the popular "Rick James" sketch. After a few minutes, Chappelle returned and continued by saying, "The show is ruining my life." He stated that he disliked working "20 hours a day" and that the popularity of the show was making it difficult for him to continue his stand-up career which was "the most important thing" to him. He also told the audience:

You know why my show is good? Because the network officials say you're not smart enough to get what I'm doing, and every day I fight for you. I tell them how smart you are. Turns out, I was wrong. You people are stupid.[15]

Programing in the US is aimed at an 8th grade education level since that is generally where the most return per production dollar can be found.

That is why things like Chappelle Show and some foreign programing from Canada and the UK can be so refreshing. Aimed at a more cerebral audience. : |

So, he didn't get a very good licensing deal from Comedy Central when he signed his contract for the show, so now he is mad that he is not getting paid when the show is licensed out to broadcast the reruns.

:dunno

He signed a bad deal and is now trying to flex his celebrity to punish those who got the better of him in that deal.

Yeah exactly. Comedy Central invested in him as well. It's not like he had a gun to his head when he signed that deal.

No, but he was quite clearly taken advantage of. Just because it's legal to do doesn't make it moral or just. That he's got enough of a platform to strike back at them in meaningful ways isn't a bad thing imo.

He left Comedy Central (Viacom-CBS) because he wasn’t happy that the contract prevented him from directing DVD sales to his social interests.

In turn he REALLY screwed his co-creator and writer Neal Brennan, who is hilarious and the source of many of Chappelle Show’ biggest hits.

Viacom sold the rights to Netflix to show the old series, as is their right.
Dave got pissed at Netflix for showing them despite his being contracted with Netflix to produce specials at a smooth 20m per. He’s done three.

So no more Chappelles Show on Netflix - presumably they’ll appear again once the term of his contract with them ends.

It’s a chickenshit move but at least he didn’t blow his brains out like Freddie Prinze. Guess fame and money make some people uncomfortable.

Yeah. And what? Am I supposed to feel sorry for a $50 millionaire? :dunno

Well he's directly asking the fans who follow him to not support a stream of his content that doesn't support him.

This seems a reasonable request for the folks who are invested in supporting his work. if you are not invested in supporting his work, watch wherever you please. It's not a hard decision.

Define "supporting his work".
That could mean more than a few things.

For me it means paying for someone's work so they reap the greatest financial benefit with as few middlepersons as possible. With regard to a handful of of music artists I like so support, this means buying their albums and any merch directly from them.

To you it may mean something different. You do you, boo.

Dave Chappelle is the Bill Watterson of comedy. I respect them both and am glad they ended up with creative control of there art.

I don't feel sorry for him, but I understand what he's doing. He's trying to step in and make it harder for the people coming up behind him don't get fucked too. Chapelle has always been a guy who will go to bat for the little guy.

I was watching a shitload of his videos the other night on YouTube.
I’m gonna watch the old stuff and the new stuff. It’s not like i don’t have time to watch both.
He got a crappy deal so can’t blame him for his take on it.
