REALLY? No replies? Well, I know the timing's weird with my work schedule. But I leave tomorrow and I know some peeps will want to check out these roads...

Staying in Oakhurst, planning on riding the Mammoth Pool/Scenic Byway on Thurs, up near Kaiser Wilderness and Huntington Resevoir on Fri, Return via Hwy 41 into Yosemite and return 120 to 4 on Sat.

I'll update on my trip. :ride

Looks like a great ride. Haven't been to the Sierras in too long. Alas, life is just too busy ATM.

Day 1 Contra Costa to Oakhurst

Wow. A full day of riding and anticipation of 3 more days of riding. Rider magazine April 14 grounded me where I already had been dreaming. Staying in Oakhurst is a little high-season crazy with three languages spoken in the hotel hallway. But the riding is extraordinary and the scenery is even better!

I took Marsh Creek Rd out towards Tracy and 580. Avoiding the Altamont was So Good. Hwy 120 then shortcutting onto La Grange but missing my turn onto 132 just fed me more pretty roads.

A moment of reverence for the fire-damaged Jeffrey Hotel in Coulterville, then on to the famed Little Dragon on hwy 49. Awesome but watch those slippy tar snakes!

Great views, roads, and other roadside attractions kept me entertained until Oakhurst. I originally planned some sidetrips today but was happy to finish with 225 miles and something left for the next few days.

It's the Sierra... Ya can't do it all in one trip.

Do what Ya picked.... Next time do what Ya didn't do the first time. Then go again, doing more.

Be giddy happy it is so close, and so different, than the Bay Area.

Day 2 Minarets Rd to Beasore

Whew! A full day with scale from the Minarets peaks to lots of wildflowers.

Climbing from North Fork on a sometimes patchy, sometimes bumpy, always scenic all the way out Forest Service road 81. Stops at the preserved 1860's Ross Cabin, Arch Rock, and a dozen other photo ops slowed the pace, but the flowers smelled sweeter. Lots of salvage logging from a recent fire.

Returning partway on 81, I turn north on narrower, bumper Grizzly Rd. It then connects with smooth, swoopy Beasore Rd. I connect the dots back to Oakhurst for a relatively short 140 miles, but lots of memories.

Day 3 Oakhurst to Kaiser Pass and back

Whoa! Even the horses I saw today pranced and romped the rough hills. There's good riding any horse, even my Suzuki, round the curves and over the hills. Rivers have carved these canyons for millennia but I only have a few days.

The variety of different routes give me good options, especially between Oakhurst and North Fork. Change routes, different directions keep me on my toes. All roads are pretty here, they roll up and around. Most are good roadways with light traffic

Auberry Rd delighted with switches and smoothies past ridgeline manicured homes. Connecting with hwy 16181, a 4 lane sweeper expressway to elevation. Turning toward Huntington Lake, I detoured the back way through steeps, a little narrower and bumpier.
On toward Kaiser Pass, the road opens up for a half dozen miles with sweet sweepers. Then a gate blares GOATS and we have a few more miles of great goats, remote and spectacular alpine scene.

Darkening skies and a little lite rain had me returning before my intended hike up Kaiser Peak. So much for my reliving a hike my wife and I had done late last century.

Alternating the identical route with alternates kept the scenery and mind fresh.

Rivers and, elevation create a lot of hydroelectric power here, and the same forces make for some incredible canyon riding and pass-bagging. 200 miles, more goats, fewer pics.

Day 4 Oakhurst to Yosemite to home

Wheee! Day 4 is another roll-iciking day, a variety of all rides. Getting anxious to be home with my wife and regular day-to-day life. But first...

The road up hwy 41 into the southern entrance of Yosemite is packed with motels, eateries, and touristy what-not stores. I did stop earlier at the 41 Trading Post which has a variety of authentic and kitschy western items. Some very nice and vintage stuff. Generations of owners.

Then rural, a couple of small communities, and into the park. The road immediately north of Oakhurst is a nice twisty climb...jump in before that RV and enjoy the gap to the next car. :ride

After the gate and the nice entrance person (aren't they all?), I stopped at the Pioneer History Center and did a quick tour of their carriages and wagons, buildings and covered bridge, and big Gray Barn with a talkative volunteer. Nice if you have a little time.

On to Yosemite Valley with traffic, little by little, upping the cruising speed. Really, 35-40 mph is enough to get you there, not be bored, and admire the scenery. Enjoy the relaxed pace.

The valley, of course, is filled with a bouquet of mother nature's stunning work. But it's also filled with crowds of tourists. And while it's great to see so many enjoy the sights, it's welcome to find a quiet spot to commune with nature's spirits. But the hike I planned was subverted by my late start and dinner plans with family. I promised myself to return soon with more time and ambition to experience the park.

Leaving the valley of hwy 120, patches of burned areas remind me of the most recent and earlier fires. :wtf I'd seen this on the Minarets Road loop, hwy 120 hwy above Groveland, and other areas.

I took the opportunity to enjoy Priest Grade to ride down New Priest Grade, up Old Priest, and down NPG again. When I came up to a group of slower-moving vehicles I slowed to a safe stop on the side, waited to see a vehicle approaching from behind, the enjoy the open gap at my own tempo.

At Chinese Camp I turned west onto Red Hill Rd, a quiet, patchy, scenic "shortcut" back to where Le Grange road meets hwy 120. I recommend it, if you have a little more time and suspension travel. :thumbup

On the way home, I took French Camp Rd, a diagonal northwest ""shortcut""" to hwy 4. Then 4 to Byron, and Marsh Creek Rd twisting back home.

All together, an awesome ride with great to outstanding riding, scenery and roads. A little history mixed in made it even more interesting. Better long-range planning would probably have given me more options for lodging at more reasonable prices. Oakhurst is well-situated for this area, with lots of support options.

Today 250 miles, total for the four days 800 miles. Good weather window with some very cool mornings, very warm afternoons in valleys, and very light rain very occasionally. Very, very good. Outstanding roads and scenery, highly recommended!
