Cat in an apartment?

I've had a nagging feeling to get a pet lately after moving out to texas and I'm leaning towards getting a cat. My concern is would having a litter box in a 1br/1ba going to stink up the entire place? My place is about 900sqft.

i lived in a condo for a few years. eventually it was time to sell that condo. just so happens the neighbor, whose condo was a mirror of my floor plan but "upgraded" per sillycone valley condo standards, put his on the market about 5 days before mine.

mine was 1985 era condo inside. brown, beige, and barf colored everywhere but otherwise clean

in the end, his sold for about 10k more than mine.

i'm fairly sure the difference was largely in part to his smelling like cat urine. i assume they pissed all over their favorite places in addition to the "litterbox closet" which had the strongest stench. said stench was immediately noticeable from the moment the front door opened (my realtor took us in because... why not?)

so the short answer is Yes. Illl smell up the place

however, if you're a dorky engineer type it might not matter because eventually you won't notice because cat people never notice the stink of their own cat in my experience. also, you'll probably get married in your early 40s and move into your wife's place like my former neighbor did?

I live in a 750sqft duplex with Erin and two cats. It’s only stinky when the cats drop a deuce. As a cat owner you should be cleaning the kitty litter twice a day.

Since you have a small space look into Catastrophic Creations. We have an entire wall dedicated to it and the cats simply love it.

I ran a “Cat Genie” robot litter box for awhile. Worked quite well. I’d disassemble and clean it biweekly. The refill cartridges are arguably overpriced but the device definitely reduced the daily cat work.

I'm a dog guy but my ex had a cat. The quality of food seemed to play a big role in that subject. Kinda makes sense, actually. Whatever goes in has to come out. I could tell when she went low budget simply by walking in the house. Spend the money on good food. (you should anyway for obvious reasons)

Leave the window open or get a kitty door? :dunno

I've always had indoor/outdoor kats. The only time mine uses his box is when it snows :laughing

Both cats I have had in my life have just showed up one day. Impossible to keep those buggers inside. :laughing

I've lived with 4 cats in a 930 sq ft, shared 1br/1ba apartment. It's manageable, but you will be cleaning the litter box twice a day or more (which you should be doing anyway). You should play with them as much as you can, too. They don't have a ton of room to run around.

If you are sure that you will consistently give that cat the care and attention it needs, you should go for it.

The kitchen/living room is hardwood, bedroom is carpet. Although there is a carpet I have under the sofas so that's my only other concern really

Will definitely check it out!

I'm a dog guy also, but I don't like small dogs and I know I couldn't give a medium-large dog what it deserves activity wise

I live on the 20th floor so there's no windows in the living room area, just the bedroom. There is a balcony though which I could cat-ify :cool

Trash shoot is on my floor and indoors so i'd just need to take a really small walk to dispose which is great. Also I work from home anywhere from 2-5 days a week so I can definitely give it the attention it needs

Yes and remember, its like a 12 or 15 year commitment if you have a healthy well cared for cat.

That's the goal!

I've been eyeing cats at the humane society. There's definitely some cute ones. One has a missing eye that's been there for a while apparently and I have my eye on him (no pun intended).

We bought one of those enclosed catboxes with the little swinging door and a "charcoal" filter on the roof. Didn't get too stinky at all with our cats.

Of course 2 musty teenaged boys and two dogs and their funk might just have masked the smell, though... :laughing

Get a reptile. They are low maintenance and fun to feed.

Teach the cat to piss/shit in the toilet. Kick it up a notch by teaching it to flush afterwards.

Both totally doable, btw.
