Carrizo Plain

Anyone have tracks or waypoints for Carrizo plain? I know it's pretty much one road straight through but maybe theres some stuff off the bearing path to find.

Looks like we might be getting some moisture and that might lead to a spring bloom?

Not just one straight road. Lots of roads that come off the main road. I have gone to the last two super blooms in my camper. The road in the valley is the main road. Another view without my camper. There are some great roads to ride. Best views are on and off Elkhorn road east side of the valley.

It’s almost impossible to get lost there. Lots of little roads and spurs off the 2 main north/south roads. Just go and explore and have fun. I’ve seen tons of flowers in the western hills there in the last few superbloom years. Oh, and post photos, please :)

This was taken around this time last year, passed through Carrizo on the way to CABDR then went through again (because sierra passes closed) on the way back and it was much more colorful.

I have a small collection of tracks. Don’t think I can post them here though. Message me an email address and I can send a file.

Seriously, it’s not a very big area. On the west side you’ll run into a fence before you get to HwY 166, to the east you’ll go over the Temblor Range and end up in Taft or Maricopa. I’ve done all kinds of exploring there (and posted lots of ride reports on the area) and never had more than my Benchmark map and the little brochure thing that you get at the visitor center and/or online. I never got lost. Just go!

This ride report from 2011 shows a lot of the stuff to the west that we found just by cruising around looking for stuff...

https://bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=366429

One thing, though...if it's wet, stay out of the middle! The territory between Soda Lake Road and Elkhorn Rd can get really nasty when it's wet and you'll never make it out of there. I've seen the BLM trucks get stuck out there after trying to rescue members of the public after they've gotten stuck. It's serious business.

rereading that ride report was like visiting an old friend ... :laughing

looked for Nemo Brinker Carrizo mud pics, but we'll have to settle for TwoWheelsRule's pics:

At another point, we used my bike to tow my buddies bike out of the mud (tow-strap FTW!)

Eventually, there was probably 40LBs of mud on each bike, plus another 10 on each rider.

if you click on the blue square after TWR's name at the top of the quote, it will bring you to his fun ride report ...

Would post my own pics of Carrizo mud, but I've always been too wimpy to go anywhere near it ... :facepalm

I have not hit it in prime time. Need to do that one day.

Epic flowers / nature is epic. :ride

These are from a road that runs along the top of the Temblor Range. The section that's south of Hurricane road is pretty fun.
