When the redhead was grabbed, I thought to myself, "Dude, you'd have been better off grabbing a Jap."

This is a solid action movie. No weirdness like Green Lantern, or the soullessness of Transformers, and I did like both of those. But the 'cap is a better movie I think. Next up, Cowboys and Aliens. BTW: Friends with Benefits is almost the perfect date movie, whether it's with your wife (in my case) or that other person. Plenty of funny shit to keep you laughing without dumbing down the content.

The action was just right and I was damn glad they followed the World War Two/Super Soldier Serum-Hydra storyline.

Yep, and Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull........ WINNING!!!!!! That's actually the reason I was looking forward to seeing it, Weaving is the mad note. But he didn't say: "It is inevitable Mr. Rogers." Somewhat disappointing....:laughing

Hugo Weaving was a great Red Skull, he wasn't over the top, the character is a bit two dimensional though, but he did pull it off and that itself speaks volumes of his acting abilities.

I was hoping Marvel woulnd't fuck up the storyline from Cap's history but they did...and worse than Micheal Bay would have. IT was hard to sit through some of the fuckups...cause to a fan, they're not all that small.

I saw it, not expecting much. it was exactly what it was, part of a massive marketing campaign linking a bunch of movies together.

im not privy to the specifics of CA's history like berto, but I imagine they didnt stay true that much to it. it was entertaining though, as far as marvel movies go, which are dumbed down flicks designed to be somewhat bland. I think it was on par with thor...

my main gripe, like with most flicks nowadays, way way too much un-needed CGI. drives me fuckig nuts.

I feel like its not fair to compare these to the christopher nolan batman flicks sometimes. those are so insanely good. I dont know why these companies dont take note, a well acted serious comic flick is both possible AND makes a ton of $$

oh and the convientent, "you've been frozen for a bazillion yrs," trick at the end snnooorrre

That's from his original history, only he's frozen in a block of ice and found by the Avengers.

Bucky is his sidekick (complete with his own uniform) who Cap meets in his Euro military camp. He discovers Rogers is Captain America and forces him to take him along. He's about 16 at the time...and his death is profound for Cap (and that's not the way it happened at all).

Lots of other stuff, but selling war bonds never happened either...etc, etc.

Marvel is a fledgling studio, I'm not expecting The Dark Knight from them. This was a solid effort. I enjoyed it and would watch it again.

And I thought I was cynical......... To bring the Avengers together, they have to change things. Bucky dying saving the 'cap goes right along with the original story. He might not have been a kid, but so what? Movies that try to stay true to the source material usually end up sucking. I thought the crass bond selling was funny (the 'cap didn't know how powerful he was, and he was just happy to be in the fight, in whatever capacity, and then he kinda just sulked off the stage after the front line guys started giving him shit, :laughing) and made a solid point about politicians using people for their own agendas. It's tough for someone to make a movie that will appeal to the hardcore fans of a franchise, and have it succeed. The Watchmen, for example, tried too hard to stay to the source material and ended up pissing off the faithful by not going far enough (the ending made the fan boys foam at the mouth, but really a giant squid? ffs that would have been lame), and the public just couldn't wrap their head around Dr. Manhattan (large blue penis scarey :( ). I thought it was pretty good, given the inherent difficulty of translating that material to a movie. Action movies don't have the luxury of allowing characters to wallow in their angst or whatever (Bucky's death was just another casualty. It hurt, but dwelling on it would accomplish fuck all), they need to move by telling the story with the action, this could end up with an unbearable series of montages, but that wasn't the case with Captain America. I only remember one......Anyways, I thought they did a good job. And Thor didn't suck as much as it could of....nothing great, but competent film making of a very difficult character.

I was waiting for your perspective. You have had the Cap as your avatar for like...evar, so I figured you're the authority on all things CA.

So I don't know the history. I know his name, the army juiced him up to make him what he is, and has that shield. But that's it. So would someone like me enjoy the movie?

it was aight.

The dark knight and batman begins pretty much ruined superhero movies for me.

Suffice to say i wish they would have touched on the theme of patriotism and sacrifice with more gravity.
i kind of wished there was more subtext as well.

Exactamundo.

My biggest problem was his shit super powers. I hate major incongruencies, like when they show him catching a car by running, jumping over a fence or throwing that first bad guy out of the water, then he can't carry his friend out of the prison or save him when he's falling?

I'd give it a B-, it wasn't like the fucking horrid Fantastic Four movies, Green Lantern or second Hulk movie, but I wouldn't watch it again.
