And I thought I was cynical......... To bring the Avengers together, they have to change things. Bucky dying saving the 'cap goes right along with the original story. He might not have been a kid, but so what? Movies that try to stay true to the source material usually end up sucking. I thought the crass bond selling was funny (the 'cap didn't know how powerful he was, and he was just happy to be in the fight, in whatever capacity, and then he kinda just sulked off the stage after the front line guys started giving him shit, :laughing) and made a solid point about politicians using people for their own agendas. It's tough for someone to make a movie that will appeal to the hardcore fans of a franchise, and have it succeed. The Watchmen, for example, tried too hard to stay to the source material and ended up pissing off the faithful by not going far enough (the ending made the fan boys foam at the mouth, but really a giant squid? ffs that would have been lame), and the public just couldn't wrap their head around Dr. Manhattan (large blue penis scarey
). I thought it was pretty good, given the inherent difficulty of translating that material to a movie. Action movies don't have the luxury of allowing characters to wallow in their angst or whatever (Bucky's death was just another casualty. It hurt, but dwelling on it would accomplish fuck all), they need to move by telling the story with the action, this could end up with an unbearable series of montages, but that wasn't the case with Captain America. I only remember one......Anyways, I thought they did a good job. And Thor didn't suck as much as it could of....nothing great, but competent film making of a very difficult character.
