Years ago while sitting on Angel Island for a picnic, a friend gave me the following brain teaser. I just found it again, written on white paper from my deli sandwich from that day. The info I'll give you will allow you to solve the puzzle. Don't cheat by looking on the net, as the internet was not even available when I solved it.

A man asks his friend if she has any children.
"Three she says."
How old are they?
She tells him "the product of their ages is 36."
He says "I need more information."
"Well, the sum of their ages is my home address and you know what that is."
"I still need more information", he says.
She replies "The oldest one likes tennis."
What are the ages of her kids?

The key is that the sum of ages was not enough information. The only ages with a product of 36 and the same sum are:

1, 6, 6
2, 2, 9

While it's possible to deliver 2 kids that are not twins in a 12-month period, I'll go with (2, 2, 9) because that more clearly has an "oldest".

Product = multiplication

options :

2*2*9= 36, sum = 13

1*4*9 = 36 , =14

2*3*6 = 36, = 11

1*6*6 = 36, = 13

Two options have the sum of 13 and she said that we would know the house number. She also said the oldest likes tennis which would mean it's most likely a 9yr old. Also that would mean that there isn't a middle child or most likely isn't so I'll go with 2,2,9.

If you know the address and that still doesn't help, then it must be because there are multiple options that have the same sum.

Rodr and Pierre I am, are correct. Good job guys! Twenty some years ago, I spent an hour or so solving the question. There are eight combinations of the three kids ages that give you a product of 36. The two that give you the same sum are 2,9,2 and 1,6,6. The man needs more information because he has realized that the two above products are the same and can not solve the problem. The woman says "the oldest one plays tennis." Only one has an oldest one: 2,9,2. This is the answer.

Both have an oldest. Twins don't come out at the same time.

Not sure what point you're trying to make. The tennis fan is merely referred to as "oldest". If the OP is trying to narrow the options down based on what combinations give an oldest, it would be incorrect to dismiss twins, as there would still be an oldest in existence.

No place is human age given in minutes. twins are recorded as having the same age no matter which comes out first. Unless one comes out a minute before midnight and the other after midnight.

Well I got hit in the head pretty good yesterday by the horse. I hope his fucking head hurts too.
