Lots of positive things going on right now in the area of lanesharing in CA

The new lanesharing survey is kicking off in the next few days. This is a follow up to last year's survey and is again sponsored by OTS. Last year's results showed us that 80% of riders say they laneshare and 51% of motorists think that lanesharing is illegal. We are very interested to see if all the attention we have garnered from the published lanesharing guidelines results in an increase in the number of motorists who know that lanesharing is legal.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month and we are working on the media messaging that will be going out and we are hoping to include a big push at educating motorists on the fact that lanesharing is legal.

We will see the highway message boards lit up with the motorcycle safety awareness message for several days in May. Currently looking at what that message may say.

How can you help? Laneshare safely. Folllow the guidelines. Get your fellow motorcyclists to do the same. Show everyone in CA that lanesharing can be done safely. Don't be "that guy" that pisses off the masses by lanesharing like a fool and bringing ill will on all of us.

I typically ride like an ass, but I've been trying to split according to the new 'guidelines'.

So awesome...once again, thanks SVS.

I like the (soft) language too. Motorcyclists "should consider" the following guidelines...

Thus, it's just an advisory, and there is no hard limit on the speed delta, max splitting speed, etc. (something I was worried about).

California DMV is now providing a link

This data will be in the next round of motorcycle handbooks as well

small steps are turning into giant leaps

That is sweet:thumbup
I missed the meeting today because of rehab :mad :blah
Will catch up with the notes.

To all...getting the DMV on board is huge!!! Right on. The last few years have been so positive in terms of State actions regarding awareness and our safety. Totally cool :thumbup

Hopefully there won't be a huge public outrage and calls to make it illegal...

The best way to prevent that, is this.

How can you help? Laneshare safely. Folllow the guidelines. Get your fellow motorcyclists to do the same. Show everyone in CA that lanesharing can be done safely. Don't be "that guy" that pisses off the masses by lanesharing like a fool and bringing ill will on all of us.

And don't just show good behavior while sharing... encourage/remind other riders to share sanely too.

I had this experience, today, as a matter of fact. The situation was fine for a 10 mph faster "weave/split" than the recommend maximum, but I stopped myself because of the new guidelines. I also reminded a fellow rider that passing over the double yellow in stopped traffic and then squeezing back in "to cut in line" might make some motorists pretty angry. And I thought he should think about the rest of us, too. That conversation went okay.

The new information age has sure helped with all the expediency around the lane sharing issue, I believe. Thanks again, guys, for getting the ball rolling in the right direction. :thumbup

Thanks Silversvs - this stuff is awesome - particularly the DMV buy-in :thumbup And yeah, it's up to all of us to not be "that guy".

For May, how about the highway message boards saying "Lane-sharing is legal, please give motorcyles room" or something?

will there be any word of this in the DMV's car hand book?
because i doubt many will ever read the moto hand book.
and then there are those who have never even read any state hand book.(can they even read?). but they are the ones we need to watch out for.

as for signage...still waiting for approved signs stating ok for motos in the carpool lanes.
