Brake and light inspection quesion

Whats in a title?
Can I pass my brake and light inspection with an aftermarket pipe on my bike? Does the CHP look for a carb sticker?

I went to a CHP weigh station and they said they don't do it anymore and that I'd have to take the bike to a shop qualified to do the inspection. A few phone calls later and I took it to Diablo Kaw/BMW in Concord, got it done in 30 minutes and $50.

And the brakes and lights are the only things they check. Make sure they all work, even the one illuminating the license plate.

Does CHP do the inspection? I thought you could go to a certified inspection station for that?

They don't, but once you get your certificate, you'll have to go to a CHP office with your brake / light inspection certificate and they'll do a final look over and sign off. I guess it would depend on the officer if he would bother looking at the pipe or not.

That's good to know, for future reference. They gave you the official inspection slips, correct? Not the stamped statement of facts.

Also, the 76 station in Castro Valley inspects motorcycles too, but it's $80.

And OP I just had my CHP vin inspection a couple of weeks ago and I got no grief for having after market pipes. This was up in Vallejo and I think the inspecting officer's name was Collard.

They gave me nothing. They sold me (technically :teeth) the inspection forms and the inspection. Guy was thorough and checked every brake and light. He charges for 1/2 hour of his time, not including the time taken to fill out the official DMV forms and the bill. I took both to the DMV, was nice, smiled a lot, helped the DMV folks find the engine and frame SNs, and smiled in the freezing rain. Smile a lot, be nice, and smile some more. :thumbup :teeth

Make sure every light works and that hitting the brakes actually lights up the brake light(s). He charges for the inspection, regardless if you pass or not. :party
