Blisters on the hands

So i've noticed over the course of this year that my hands are taking more abuse than past years. Probably because i've been more aggressive with my riding style. I see the pros and GP guys taping their hands under their gloves. My question is do any of you guys do it?

My hands are already pretty beat up from the gym and working, but i really want to prevent the blisters where i don't have calluses, such as where the finger meets the palm, on the finger side.

So what do ya'll do under your gloves?

Well, my little girl hands have been getting blisters for the past year or so :laughing

I tried tape, it was a PITA

Now I'm using the Risk palm protectors - they don't last very long (fair warning, I plan on buying a new set for every race weekend and keep a spare set in my gear bag) but they WORK and they fit nicely under my little-girl-hand-gloves without binding or feeling bulky.

i guess i like my gloves tight cuz i could never keep tape in place while putting them on. even if it stayed on for one session, itd be screwed after the next.

since then, ive worked on my riding technique and dont get blisters anymore. dont hold on so tight. adjust your wrist position for braking. rotate your clipons so that your hands are loaded evenly. etc etc.

This!

I do pretty well at some tracks compared to others...

Another weird thing is i get irritation, not quite blistering yet, on my left palm from braking, and a small throttle blister on my right hand middle finger grip pad.:wtf

I tried to fight through it, see if I could make the tape work. Never could get it to last more than a session - decided I'd rather have blisters followed by man-hand callouses than deal with it.

Thankfully found the Risk PP, saved me from man-hands :laughing

strange, back in the day never had that problem & I raced 8 seasons on 3 different bikes.

I'm guessing we had a much looser grip because the front end moved around so much back in the day? Front-ends of bikes are much tighter tolerances these days? I donno....

Hmmm.....

tape can be a big pain in the ass but doable. Make sure you do it right after you washed and dried your hands. If there is sweat or oil no bueno.

I have seen Andrew Lee and a couple of the other kids that wear a neoprene pad that pulls on. Seems much easier than tape though.

Gloves are the biggest variable. A glove that has soft material that does not fold and does not have a seam right where blisters develop is key. It is impossible for me to get blisters with my Insurrection gloves, with some other gloves and I get blisters within 1 session. Find a glove that is smooth, moisture absorbant and soft where it counts and you wont need to wear strap on devices...

I've had great luck w/the Held gloves = no blisters ever. :teeth

just remember to relax and remind yourself to hold the bars with a soft light grip... You might be too tense riding your bike...

I have had blister issues for years. I've tried lots of different things like dance skin, and different tapes.
What I've found that works for me is athletic tape, kind of like what boxers use.

It's sfot enough to be flexible and not interfere with riding.
You have to apply it every session for it to make a difference starting on Friday. Once you have blisters tape isn't going to help.

I'm also getting decent blistering. I since switched from AXO gloves to Racer gloves and that helped a bit. They fit better and are tighter, but not too tight.

I've also since relaxed my riding style a bit but definitely still getting blisters. Might have to try that tape out, its not too painful but it's definitely a little annoying

Another thing to think about is grips. For me, if I run large diameter grips or too soft and squirm around, I used to be prone to getting blisters. I never had a problem with Yamaha's TZ grips which were very thin and had diamond pattern surface. The MotionPro grips are very similar in pattern and thickness and I have had no issues with them.

my held phantoms gimme blisters :thumbdown

only when i do double days @ track though
I forgot to mention I almost always change to slightly softer grips. They very cheap, easy & fast to swap. :teeth

I'm still astonished why so many of you are getting blisters? I kind of wonder if it's from all the decades of riding I'm just more relaxed that some; or it's from riding the old bikes that moved around a lot (wobbles/rough ride/etc.)

Maybe its from that dish soap? :loco

Or maybe it's because the modern bikes have better suspension, better brakes, and better acceleration, all of which is more likely to put more pressure on one's arms/hands - hard braking on a modern sport bike is going to put weight on your arms. Trying to turn a bike at 100+ miles an hour, takes a fair bit of strength (for example, even at my pace this last round I was really struggling to turn the bike in the fast 8s - just a lack of power on my part from not working out enough, but that directly relates to pressure going into your hands).

I haven't noticed a huge difference between the different grips, I think my pace has a bigger effect than anything. Trackdays, street, no problems. Start pushing up to a race pace and I start to have issues.

That can't be it. Dave's experience racing motorcycles in 1982 is the final word even today.
