Black Rock Desert

wet and dry

when you look at Google Earth photos some parts look whitish and some brownish

brownish is damp and slippy, maybe soft. My Jeep Cherokee was real squirrely on that stuff.

I'll be heading up that way near the end of the month. Staying at Eagle Lake and doing day rides.
So, if there is any rain at all it sounds like the place to avoid, right?

The Black rock area is great, here's a video I made of my trip in 2012, I'm ready to go back! High Rock Canyon was the best.

Great video - nice to meet another Led Zep fan! I wish we had more time to explore High Rock, but it was too far to get there and back to the playa in a single day. I think next time we'll bring our camping gear on the bikes to allow us to range further efield.

The majority of the terrain is similar to other spots I suppose, but the playa turns to slick, deep mud. I think the "Impassible" sign that I took a photo of was not an exaggeration.

Nice report, Leo_jb! :thumbup
Thanks for the cool photos!

I love that area up there. Tons of stuff to see near High Rock, and it's even neater north of there. It just goes on forever :ride

And, yeah, don't mess with the playa…any playa…when it's wet.
Total nightmare :nchantr

Hey Tamie!

I tried to send you a pm before I left to get some suggestions on where to camp. I think next time we'll park the cars near High Rock and head out from there. Where do you usually stage from? Soldier Meadow?

Crap! I don't get notifications anymore!
Don't get `em from ADV, either :(

I usually hit that area from the other end, dropping down from the north, while staging west of Denio Junction. It gives me access to the Sheldon NWR, southeastern OR and the Hart Mt area. I have friends that love staying at Soldier Meadows but I've never stayed there myself. I think it's hard to get close to High Rock unless you hit it from the west side, and then it's lots of washboardy roads. I'd need to look at my maps to be sure.

That staging area could also give you access to the yummy cheeseburgers at field's station. :teeth

/end off topic

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't think yummy cheeseburgers are ever off topic! Especially the ones at Fields Station!:hail

I feel better now. I remembered reading about the cheeseburgers in one of your ride reports. It sure is pretty country up there.
