If you’re parked at the meters on 2d right at Market, your bike is getting towed right now, 2:15pm on Tuesday, 6/19

Fuck.
They towed my bike while I was reading this.
Wrong place/wrong time again.
I should've been looking at my bike instead of the BARF.

was that no parking sign there before, or did they just place it?

they did that to me once: parked in a legal and open spot, came back to find out my bike was towed with a brand new sign posted. wasn't there when I parked.

They were just hoisting a silver Multistrada when I walked past. I saw maybe another 4 bikes there waiting to get towed.

There must be some kind of 24/48 hour advance notice posting rule for temporary no parking enforcement.

Anyone down there have any idea how far in advance they posted the no parking signs before the tow truck feeding frenzy?

I know that here in Alameda they require 24 hours notice, but I've experienced <16 in some cases (wasn't there by 5pm, was supposedly taking effect at 8am).

Well, the towing happened on Tuesday and the no parking zone began Monday at 8am.

That does not mean the signs were out there Monday at 8am. There have been other threads here of folks parking a vehicle, only to come back to no vehicle and signs placed.

I find it hard to believe all those bikes saw and ignored the sign. Seems at least probable the signs were put there after the bikes were parked, though I'm not sure we'll be able to know one way or another.

In SF (and most other cities) you need to have the sign posted at least 24 hours in advance of needing the spot for construction. That rule isn't always followed, and you can file a complaint with Public Works I believe to contest it. I'm not sure what you get out of that if your bike's been towed--a refund of tow fees or if the poster-putter-upper gets fined? I'm guessing that without proof and/or a lot of complaints, it's probably not worth it. Signs get stolen or defaced pretty regularly, so it's a hard thing to nail down who is exactly at fault.

I dunno, I can imagine the first guy just obliviously parking there, and all the other people (probably people who habitually park there every day) just shrugging and assuming the first guy got some information.

Certainly plausible both ways.

Nothing stops you from using evidence collected from suing the poster-putter-upper in small claims court. Should be easy enough if there is video evidence available from a nearby security cam.
