Cool. I'm a train fan. I hope to take the California Zephyr from Emeryville to Chicago soon.

I am not a huge train fan, but I am glad that some folks are keeping history alive. Thanks for sharing.

i think next week is the official unveiling i think its doing a tour

The christening is at 9:30 AM MDT on the 4th and then 4014 and 844 are double heading to Ogden UT to arrive there on the 8th. There will be some festivities on the 9th with 4014 and 844 recreating the meeting of Jupiter and 119 for the driving of the golden spike.
Then at the golden spike museum at Promontory point there will a recreation of the golden spike ceremony with the replica Jupiter and 119 engines on the 10th.
The 4014 and 844 will depart Ogden on the 12, making various stops along the way, and arriving back in Cheyenne on the 19th.

Nothing like a live steam event, I was smart enough to hit rail-fair expo in Sacto's rail museum in the '80's?
Live steam in Hill City SD.
Live steam in Ely NV. One can pay extra to run the engine from the cab, with instruction.
This monster 4-8-8-4, is huge, must have 4 hinges in it to follow the tracks

Just one between the front and rear engine. The front engine swings under the boiler to follow the track. If you get a chance to watch "Last of the Giants" there is a really good head on shot with the locomotive going through 2 switches and you get to see the articulation up close. There is also an overhead shot of one going through the yard.

The christening of the locomotive is tomorrow morning (5/4/19) at 8:30 am PDT and the run to Ogden leaves at 9:00 am PDT.

Traveling by train is one of my favorite things to do. Taking a cross-country trip via steam would just be icing on the cake for me. I'd be happy to pony up for it. I'm a huge history nerd and that's basically a history-gasm for me. Especially if it's in legacy sleeper cars. :love

Sacto's rail museum has a forward cab steamer, following a smoke stack thru tunnels, snow sheds, not so fresh air.
OK, three hinges, both sets of 4 have to be articulated too
Live steam in Virginia City.
Santa Cruz still running?
Skunk train in Willits
Nevada's rail museum in Carson City

Crazy...and totally believable. And some poor bastard had to shovel all of it. :wow

No, they used an Archimedes screw to feed the coal into the firebox. A man wouldn't even be able to throw enough coal to keep the steam up enough to operate the whistle.

The 4014 has been converted to burn No.5 fuel oil.

I had no idea how much work it takes to operate a steam locomotive! They're such incredibly complex pieces of machinery, and a testament to mankind's ingenuity!

they are truly a sight. just standing next to one and looking over all of it you appreciate the work that went into building and operating them
