Beware of 580 - High chance of nails

Lots and lots of miles and never had a nail in my tire... lately heard of a LOT of riders (2+ different riders a week, atleast) getting nails in their tires on 580... and today I get back from a ride to alices and look what I find...

I did ride a lot of highway on the way back, but I'm betting my money it was 580. Beware...

580 is pretty long and in the BA it spans two counties. Coming "back" from Alices EB on 580 do you think it happened in Livermore?

From the other riders experiences and my own I'm fairly sure it's most likely to happen from the livermore to castro valley part, probably due to the large amount of construction going down around those areas... Livermore to 680 onramp to be more precise, actually.

Ok now that we have narrowed down the possible "where" on 580 it happened, and Hooli doesn't have to worry, yeah op I hear ya and that would not surprise me at all. Until this week I was riding that ramp to work early every morning myself and the dirt spills alone from the work vehicles right there from 580 west to 680 south is a joke of a job by whoever is the general contractor as trucks are spilling dirt and debris everywhere there onto the road and the trucks and cars waiting to merge from 580w-680s is an extreme danger for any motorcyclist especially so please be careful there people my commute time is 5 a.m.-ish and the darkness just multiplies the challenging navigation there. Jobsite transfer to Hayward now so I have to deal with the 880s-92w now so if I see Hooli(on his way to work on a Multistrada?) i'll give a wave,:cool.

Good heads up op:thumbup

Good luck with that, I moved to the east bay earlier this year and now take 101 to work. :laughing Appreciate the thought though. :)

I commute every day between CV and the Santa Rita rd exit, haven't picked up a nail yet. maybe it's between the Hacienda and Vasco exits?

Yeah I think that's the higher risk zone -- or your just lucky (like I was, until now)

Either way, the whole thing is fubar and risky, so just stay on top of your pre-ride inspections. If I hadn't been cleaning the bike/chain I mightve not even noticed. I definitely didnt notice when riding, despite it not being flush with the rubber. My tire is losing no air (so far) either.

I think this warning is a little...umm...useless.

I don't take 580 for the fun factor, I've driven through there regularly for a while, and haven't picked up a nail or screw. Technically since I'm in my car and have a wider tread pattern I'm 2x more likely to get one. And since you can't specify where you picked it up, this is probably just a bad luck sort of post.

Now if this were a gravel patch, an oil slick, pothole, something you could substantiate and something we could look out for this pay would make sense. But I'm not gonna drive surface roads to avoid 580 on the off chance that there might be a nail in the road.

Your cage also has more durable tread than the typical moto. I think the initial cautionary is well meaning. :)

I don't care what you do, or don't do. The point is now you know. Your welcome.

Highway work doesnt really use nails. Everything is bolted in place. If anything its probably unsecured crap falling on the freeway. Once everyone picks up all the nails the roads will be clear...hehehe

if they're building bridges or retaining walls they typically use a lot of nails for the wood forms. I'm not familiar enough with the area to know if they're doing that kind of work or just repaving the freeway.
