Behaving Badly: Lane Split Edition

Caught this dude yesterday on 101S around Burlingame. FD was responding to a vehicular crash and this dude almost splattered himself on the Fire Truck.

If this dude is a Barfer, just take it easy. You almost ended yourself and you might have ended others if these guys were responding to a life & death call and didn't arrive on time.

Holy shit! What an idiot...for so many reasons. Someone needs to slap some sense into that guy...

Nice video/gif editing BTW. Wish I knew how to do that kinda cool stuff...

It seems like the fire engine wanted to shift lanes to fit between OP and the Ford, and there was a flash or two from the side lights, which could be indicators, but fire engines have all sorts of lights. Too fast for conditions, splitting past a gap ... yeah, we have a kamikaze.

Yeah, the rider is like 3 or 4 times the speed of the traffic. Beggin' to be boned.

No one's day was affected by this guy's actions. The fire truck didn't have an opening to change lanes by the time the guy went by. I'm not a fan of threading the needle while splitting, but the bigger bikes I end up on sometimes sort of make it a necessity. If he hit you or your car, or caused you to brake or enter some input into the wheel, then maybe you could complain. If a rider gets by and continues their life without impacting yours, let it be.
I know, I'm all sorts of contrarian, but I am tired of pretending that we're all some kind of polite, courteous angels. The number of us that don't ride with a reasonable level of aggression and speed is far fewer than any of you will admit.

Too much lean angle...
It looks like he intentionally accelerated in order to make that thread before the gap increase would allow the truck to merge.

I don't care if you're Marc "Crash out of the Lead" Marquez, that dude is asking for a trip to the hospital or the morgue. There is no way to avoid any of the things that could happen at that delta. Not to mention it gives even more fodder for the anti splitting crowd.

That's what I see as well. His speed coming up on the camera is pretty reasonable, but then uses a bit of throttle to get past the truck. Maybe not the most cautious maneuver in the world, but it sure doesn't seem worthy of it's own thread.

Someone said the fire truck was a responding, but I could not tell. If it was, then it was, worthy...

Otherwise, I've done that past a few tech buses... I don't like racking up to the pinch, though...

Why get all defensive or aggro about someone posting this up. Regardless of your level of politeness or what you may think about the video, it's a great reminder for each of us personally on how we are going to manage our ride to work or home.

This is a moment of opportunity to reflect on as we throw a leg over our motos. :ride

Totally avoiding getting into the weeds about how this person is splitting, but I'm surprised there weren't exceptions written into the guidance for staying away from emergency vehicles. I try not to split up to or in front of police, fire, etc in case they get a call.

I'm calling it a good split. His delta coming up to the truck was about +15 mph and he had already committed to splitting past the fire engine before there was any indication it was looking for a gap. Despite the rider's seemingly good reaction times, if he would have chosen to brake hard and abort the split it would put him near the truck's back-rear tire, in a blind spot, and possibly getting pinched if the truck would (unlikely) swerve. The minimum correction when he got back in the right side of lane one after that burst of acceleration shows control.
