Be careful of that metal in the streets of SF!

Hey Guys,

Had a little mishap last night in SF. Was on Church street, and when I went to cross the Muni track, my 07 CBR600 slipped and went down. Road rash on my left hand and my right knee. Those things are SO slippery when wet. Happened SO fast! Be careful all!

The bike isn't in great shape. One weird thing that even in neutral, the bike won't move forward without pulling in the clutch... Dunno why.

Glad you are ok! You mentioned road rash to your hand and knee, it was raining out and pretty crappy all around. Were you wearing gloves or any protection at all?

Are we having fun yet?
Sorry to hear this. Can you give more info so we can better learn from this?

1. What path angle did you cross the tracks?
2. How much lean did you have?
3. What was your speed?
4. What were you doing with the throttle?
5. Was the pavement and tracks wet or dry?
6. Did the front or rear slip out?

Ya know, I did all the wrong things.

1) I pretty much hit the track at very little angle at all. I crossed the first one the same way, and cautiously approached and crossed the 2nd one at about the same tiny angle. Dumb.

2) No lean.

3) About 20MPH

4) No throttle. Steady.

5) Pavement and tracks were wet.

6) I believe that both wheels slipped. The bike went down with zero warning. No chance to save it.

Oh well, live and learn. I know this sounds like a newbie move, and it IS, but I've actually been riding (mostly without incident) for about 22 years...

Don't have to live in SF to pay for that mistake; I commute to SF. I did the same 2 years ago during the first rain of the season and crashed on Market St riding over those slippery rails. Many others have done the same OP. Sorry your bike got messed up.

Been there done that on the N-Judah tracks.

In dry weather those R/R tracks, manhole covers, street construction covers are no problemo.

In wet weather those daily hazards are like ice.

OP,

Glad you are ok, and Thank You for helping me learn from your experience !

Please post up, in the "Garage", with the transmission/ clutch problem, I'd like to see what some of our knowledgeable people say about that :thumbup

Nope! Leather jacket, but no gloves. Stupid, I know. Got cocky...
Some of us have to learn the hard way that you should never ride a motorcycle without gloves. I have scars on my right hand as a reminder of that. Fortunately I was wearing a helmet when that event happened, since at the time I lived in a state where I could have legally ridden without one. I would have scars on my face too if I had left the helmet at home.

Gloves, helmet, and a motorcycle jacket for ALL rides. Riding pants and boots too if I'm going more than ten miles from my home. Yes, ATGATT is a better policy, but I have an issue with spending more time getting into and out of my gear than I'll be spend riding. :nerd

Check your shifter rod...it might need readjustment. Also when in "neutral" does it start up at all?

how can you hit those tracks with very little angle? left turn into duboce is forbidden

I was on Church near 16th, getting ready to take a left onto 16th... I should have made a wider turn instead of riding over the track with so little angle...

Why not? Without gloves my hands freeze in this weather, and without gloves my last couple crashes would have been much more miserable. Road rash on palms is the worst.

Heck I'd go so far as to say that I'd rather be riding with no jacket than no gloves.
