Batons and Vehicle Glass

I've watched a bunch of videos over the years in which LEOs have to smack vehicle glass many times before it breaks. Most of the batons seem to be the extendable metal ones. What's the deal with that? And has anyone considered making a ceramic-tipped baton?

I've got scratches all over an expandable baton from that. :teeth

IDK about ceramic tip, but I now have a glass punch that I have yet to try out.

It's not as easy as it looks to break vehicle glass.

That's why I don't bother with expandable batons. I carry a 29" cocobolo baton with a tennis racket grip around the handle portion.

That feeling fresh out of the academy when you hit somebody with your baton for the first time… And it does practically nothing…

Spring loaded center punch does wonders and yes I carried one for multiple purposes.

Only used my ASP once to break a car window. It took two hits. One to realize I didn't hit it hard enough, and one to break it. It was for a passed out drunk asleep in his car parked halfway in the road. Son of a bitch, that fucker barfed when I was putting him in the patrol car. Then I had to take him to the hospital rather than just to the jail. What a pain in the butt. I guess a little inconvenience for me was still better than it was for the owners of the 3 parked cars he hit prior to deciding he needed a nap.

Riddle me this.
They make ceramic end caps to put on the other end of the baton specifically for breaking windows.

I carry an emergency knife with a seatbelt cutter and glass breaker.

all of my LEO friends carry one of those folding smith & wesson knives with the spring loaded tip on the handle specifically for breaking windows & the hook for cutting seat belts.

Haha I was gonna say thats really dangerous what that dude was doing and sure enough when he broke the glass he cut himself. That stuff is super sharp I remember I broke a glass at a junkyard one time and I barely touched the glass and it cut me.

You gotta be wearing gloves or something.

I once got arrested for resisting arrest for trying to break my own car passenger window with my face in my own driveway.

The window didn't break.
