BARFistan 2017

Hey Barfers, hope everyone’s doing great on here! Hopefully those of you who were following "BARFistan 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016" recognized that it was a great opportunity to eliminate some of the misconceptions most have about the east. The project was not solely focused on Pakistan though, or even motorcycles as a matter of fact. It was about adventure, getting out of the safety cocoon and familiarity of a 9 to 5 lifestyle and braving a land that you’ve seen portrayed as a war-zone. I’ve become such a travel junkie and want to create more opportunities for you all to step outside of the hamster wheel, explore the hidden beauty of Pakistan’s many cultures, and have a life-changing experience (without breaking the bank and while having the best tour-guide you’ll ever have, me! {tho some might not agree, haha}). With 2017 Riding season just around the corner and BARFistan being wildly successful for the last 4 years, I’d like to host barfers again this summer.

I had some of my own travel plans for this year but life came in the way, so my personal travel plans have been postponed :thumbdown

However, that has given me the opportunity to have some of you jump over the pond and come ride the Himalayas with me here in Pakistan.

For 2017 I'd like to accommodate each and everyone one of you so I’ve created the tour dates below, but if you cannot make any of these and *really* want to come, email me at ADifferentAgenda@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to work with you. website is up and running if you'd like to read some more www.RideTheKKH.com

Budman has been helping me out with this and you've probably noticed sponsored banners running on BARF - Thanks BUD!
For every rider from BARF.. % will be donated to BARF because this is where friends become family and this place really has given me more than it has taken.

I’ve calculated the costs to be roughly $1250 per week.

The $1250 per week covers: Food/Meals - Motorcycle rental - Fuel for the entire journey - Motorcycle maintenance during the journey (oil changes/filters/fluids/plugs) - Support vehicle (you won't have to carry luggage on the bike with you) - Hotels (shared room) - Camping equipment - All toll and ferry charges - 2 helpers who will help you with everything from riding your motorcycle when you're tired to giving you a massage on top of the Himalayas..

Not included: - Your airfare (ranges from $800-$1200)- Visa fees (approx.. $120 for an American citizen) - Insurance costs (optional) - Bottled water (cheap!). You'll also have to pay for the parts if you crash your bike. The bike is about $1200 brand new so if you throw the bike off the mountain or total it, that’ll be the extent of your liability. Any other personal expenses you choose to incur (shopping, beer, wine, hookers, etc)

This is incredibly cool, I think I am going to start working some overtime to see if I can get enough to do this.

If anyone is on the fence about this ride, I would highly recommend that you do it. This is one of those trips that you really can't do without someone like Moin to host you. With him, you will gain access to all sorts of places that you would otherwise be denied access. Couple that with his knowledge of the area, his zest for life and his amazing friend/connection network and you have an unbeatable combination. I went for three weeks a couple of years ago and it was truly a life changing experience. Pakistan has some of the most beautiful scenery of any place I've ever been, and the people are equally amazing.

Damn dude. I miss living in the Middle East. I was born and raised in Tehran but traveled all over the region as a kid with my dad when he still owned his oil refinery and other family businesses. Had a chance to visit Lahore back in the late 90's. The bazaars and country as a whole is beautiful. Don't listen to the media about what the actual region is like. Many of the people in Iran, Aragh (Iraq), Suriea (Syria), Mesr (Egypt), Arabistan (Saudi Arabia), Emirate (UAE), and Pakistan were very friendly and hospitable, even now as an American citizen for me. Highly recommend everyone go and visit our home region. Not as scary as you think. :thumbup

This looks amazing. Two things:

1. Can women join the regular tours, or do we have to sign up for the women's-only tour?
2. I am hesitant to travel east because of our current political climate. I feel like people HATE us more than ever because of the orange asshat, aka, a thousand sausages held together with duct tape, that is Trump.

We had a woman on my tour and there were two women on the first tour. It's a non issue. As for your second point, I understand where you are coming from. My experience, however, is that when people are face to face, governmental disagreements become pretty insignificant.

Of course, you can join whichever tour you feel like.. we're planning to do some extra women empowering things in the women only tour. Like taking our bikes to an all girls school and teach them how to ride and maintain a motorcycle.

Secondly, trump policy didn't effect Pakistan in any way plus, the mountains don't really care what's going on in the world lol

If I feel it's unsafe for you guys to come to Pakistan I would never extend the offer to take you guys riding with me up in the mountains.

I've had a number of women ride with me here from US, Europe, Australia etc
I'm glad to tell you that since I started these tours, there's never been an issue, and I'm positive that my track record will stay same for years to come.
Pakistan is a beautiful country that the world just needs to see just once :)

I went two years in a row, three weeks each time. Do. Not. Hesitate. I've ridden Nicaragua and Cambodia, Pakistan is in a league of its own. I'll write more about being a girl in a middle eastern country when I get to a real computer but you 1000% have nothing to worry about.

Yay!

That is so inspiring!! I would love to hear about your travels on two wheels. I'm not sure if you saw my post awhile back about "Women, Motorcycling, and the Road to Empowerment" filled with travel tales across continents. So I am very interested in this.

I was curious last year when posted, but didn't have the vacation time...

Since I got some questions on PM... here are some basic answers

Riding difficulty:
A little bit of everything, some dirt/off-road/unpaved, some smooth, some rain, some light snow, some water crossing, some lane splitting. If you're comfortable in most conditions you'll be okay. If you're not too comfortable in wet/off-road conditions, I'd recommend the Rich Oliver 2 day Fun Camp. I did that the summer before Pakistan as a refresher... I felt comfortable at all times, never worried about anything. the bikes are slow. In a full tuck, down hill, with a tail wind, you might hit 60 mph. Also, you'll be riding on the left side of the road. Just need to keep that in mind.

Gear
So Moin says you're allowed 1 bag as all the stuff is carried in the Jeep (you see the gray jeep in the video and photos, all your stuff goes there).

What I did (since I stopped in Dubai on the way for a few days):
1 carry on sized suit case: which I checked regardless. This had all my clothes and toiletries
1 soft duffle bag: also checked. This had my motorcycle gear and a small sleeping bag
And I carried my helmet on the plane, and inside the helmet I put my GoPro and camera gear.

Clothes
Jeans and layers. I went first week of September and we had rain, sun, heat, and cold, so plan on layering. Also since I was in Dubai, I had to plan for 116ºF weather all the way down to low 30ºF in Pakistan.

Motorcycle Gear
- Helmet (I recommend a modular flip up full face helmet with a flip down sun visor, for all the stops you'll be making for photos or snacks or drinks where you don't want to take it off and on all the time)
- Gloves (and silk liners in case it got cold)
- Adventure pants
- Multi-Season Jacket (it had a removable down liner and a removable rain liner, and you can mix and match)
- Boots

Misc
- I went to the doctor and got the shots that are recommended for Middle East/Southern Asia travel
- I bought this sleeping bag which I put in the duffle bag (I get cold at night, and as a just in case in case the beds are iffy) (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TZRPQFI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
- I bought the body wash/shampoo combo liquid stuff for when I took showers

Everything else is provided, didn't feel like I needed anything more or I brought too much, I brought literally just enough for what I needed.

Other than that, it's an experience of a life time.
