... made it to the National City Best Western
Marina Gateway ... $98 AAA rate ... they
say the parking lot is safe and patrolled
24/7 ... we'll see ... :laughing

It poured rain like I've never seen from
the Grapevine to San Diego ... the
LA River was raging ... the good news
was the traffic was light and we
flowed along as fast as condition
allowed ... no stop-and-go at all ...

20170122-214353.jpg

... the plan is to hit the road at
6:30am so in theory we'll
get to BoLA around 5pm when
there's still light ... not really
clear on the situation is with
gasoline protests, gas
availability and border shut-downs ...

Can't imagine the weather did
any favors for the protesters ...

We'll see! :ride

Many of us have stayed at the same hotel and Aaron and I will be there Thursday night. To date all has been safe -and it is a nice place. I paid within a couple of bucks of the AAA rate on line through Hotels.com. Hope to see you this Friday night in Bola.

We always stop at Mama's ...
I'm guessing there's better
places but that's what we do ... :laughing

I read about the National City Marriott
in the BARF thread, it rocked! :thumbup

It was getting dark and we don't
like to
drive in Baja after dark ...
so we stopped ...

I always
wanted to stay at the fancy hotel
in Catavina ...
... so we did ... $67 ...

We may unload the bikes
and explore around here, or
finish the drive to Daggett's
and head over on the bikes
to watch whales in Guerro Negro ...

We'll see how we feel tomorrow ...

A few lessons learned

John and I made it to Catavina last night. I talk him in to saying at the nice hotel. $67. Breakfast $7. Score. Here's a few things I learned on the ride down.

* Get you tourist visa online. Stop at border wasn't bad but took 30 minutes.
* Sunset is around 5:30
* It's been cold.
* We left national city at 6:30 am. Next time I would leave at 5:30 to get to bay of LA before dark. But I drive slow and we stopped a bunch. And had lunch at mama's
* Toll road took dollars so there is no need to get pesos before. Cost 3x 35 pesos. Or about $5.
* Lots of gas. No protests.
* Exchange rate is about 20 pesos per dollar.
* Three military check points. Waved us through.
* Rain on Sunday and Monday made towns very muddy. And slow going over all.
* Bring a roll of tp.

Even if you get your FMM (tourist visa) online, you still have to stop at immigration to get it stamped so there is no real time savings.

Useful idiot
+1 to an earlier border crossing. I like to cross right at dawn, if not slightly before. No traffic and it makes it easy to get to BoLA before dusk.

Damn John! I always wanted to stay at the hotel in Catavina but I thought it was way more than $67. Next time!

Had an awesome experience on a whale watching trip several years ago. Totally worth it, and there's supposed to be a lot of whales this year. :thumb

Leo -

It used to be $100 a night. At least thats what I paid four years ago. But the exchange rate was also 12-1 then.........

John -

I have your Grizzly Wintergreen long cut. Nice pics of whale watching on Kalles FB page. You looked like Bill Murray on his first sailing trip in "What about Bob" :twofinger See you Saturday.

My favorites in Mulege
Deny's for breakfast
Las Equipillas for the best seafood. You have to ask around to find the place. It's upstairs.
Also try their Mexican hot chocolate.
