Bags/Rucksacks?

strapping and unstrapping gear can get old too. Any backpack by Chrome, Mission Bagworks, or any other bicycle-focused bag maker will be as comfortable and reliable as kreiga. You live in SF so you can actually try all these on. Take a look at kreiga at scuderia.

I carry a set of rok straps and some packable duffel bags from chico bags. They work great.

if it's a larger load, get a duffle to suit your needs. I use an old Northface backpack daily and it works for the small stuff I carry daily.

Ignoble make great backpacks that double as duffel bags and can be strapped down to your bike.

I just used a $40 Bilt dry bag on a dirtbike camping adventure and it worked really well. It has tons of tie down D rings and is bilt (lol) well!

2 ways to do it.

Buy the bag suited to the ride but not your gear.

Buy the bag suited to the gear but not necessarily riding.

For me, option #2 tends to get higher priority. If you can find a bag that does both, great, but it just depends.

For reference, I've ridden with this before when I needed to (hey, parking's a bitch in the city and fits a folded up 1-piece + helmet.)

Other bag when I'm just commuting with laptop + tablet:

Plus a couple other backpacks that vary with whatever I'm doing that day.

What's your budget? I have a Mission Workshop Vandal - the cadillac of bags that can carry a six pack and my helmet. Waterproof, lifetime warranty, and cinches down to a compact size when not maxed to full capacity.

On the other hand, as the others have stated - once I got a topcase and side bags, it revolutionized every aspect of convenience when it came to transporting things. This also included my riding enjoyment level.

Ive never been happy with the capacity of a top case, or that you cant fold it up and tuck it under the pillion when not in use, or that it constantly causes more drag regardless if you've got something in it.Or that you need a duffel bag ANYWAY for everything inside the top case, because what are you going to do when you arrive somewhere, carry all your stuff in your arms? No, you're gonna put it in a bag.

The only reason why you get a top case is because you like the way it looks permanently strapped to your bike. Which is nerdy. lol. Especially if it's a givi with it's faux tail lights. And euro bean styling.

I'm not concerned with drag and think it's a silly thing to worry about, unless you're on a track. There's a lot more to be concerned with on the road than drag.

As for how it looks, your statement is sillier than any top case could ever look. I don't mind the look, but I am not into it.

What are you carrying around everyday that you need a duffle bag for? I transport my laptop, in a sleeve, along with my tool roll, everyday to work. Any time I go on longer rides, I can fit water/snacks in there and not have to worry about carrying it on my back. For most weekend trips, I can fit everything I need in my top case. A couple pairs of boxers, couple pairs of socks and a couple shirts. I don't run side cases because I commute and split everyday. But on longer rides they'd be able to carry camping gear and more than enough clothing/gear.

anyone have any first hand experience or other recommendations?
Yes, but I have the slightly smaller Kriega R20 backpack. Personally I'd rather carry a backpack on a sportbike and my sumo, others may have other ideas, just my preference.

Given that I don't carry that much, the R20 has plenty of space for my purpose. The straps are designed for the riding position, and buckle at the chest so it really doesn't "get old" and remains comfortable. The zippers are waterproof and all the Kriega products are well built.

If you decide a backpack is how you'd like to carry your stuff, can't go wrong with Kriega.

Woah woah woah, you didn't mention you kept snacks in your top case. That changes everything. lol.

I dont need a duffelbag all the time. Thats why I dont have a top case. I keep this little gem tucked under my pillion when I need it.

Add a couple of rok straps and whenever I go out i can carry anything and everything, on the fly, and hide it all away when i dont need it.

No, you get it because you won't look like a knob going to the movies with your date trying to carry a soft drink, a bag of popcorn and your helmet.

Ever go grocery shopping while holding your helmet? It might not be that bad but wait until you smile putting your helmet in said top box and then throwing your groceries in when your done. Less weight on your back and more weight in the rear to add to traction. When you are riding, your shoulders are so square that a rear top is almost invisible except for the weight - unless you're 5 feet, 80 lbs.

While I'm not a huge fan of the looks, it's function over form. All commuters who use one acknowledge why they're so useful. I can throw my helmet, winter gloves, laptop, tire pressure gauge, and a set of tools to fix standard things. Try unwrapping your duffle bag for that, or better yet, try leaving your duffle bag on your bike while you go in for a coffee somewhere in the streets of SF. :ride

Ive never been happy with the capacity of a top case

Givi makes cases that can hold as many dead bodies as a gangster would want to tote.

I love my Monokey rack. I have a day-use topcase that I can toss my work bag into while going somewhere, and my helmet when I get there. And we have the big topcase that can hold two helmets and some gear. I've carried an engine in it.

+1 on the top case. I love mine, and it makes using a bike as main transport so much easier.

That said I also have and use a backpack. I have a mission workshop Rambler and it is awesome.

I've got that same Kriega pack and love it. It doesn't swing around at all and sits on the pillion behind me so I'm not bearing its weight.

Unfortunately, I can't wear it with my Helite air bag. So it's just hanging on a peg in my garage. If you want it, PM me. Then you'll know!
