Mmmmm...Faster
The 2018 West Coast Top Speed Season is Officially Underway!

This last weekend was opening of the Mojave Mile/Magnum, and the first event in Top Speed. After running 199MPH there last year in 2017, I was determined to break out and get a more solid pass. After the shake down pass at 170, the bike went back to the pit and we got her ready for a more spirited 2nd run.

I launched the second pass stuttering a bit in 1st gear, then at about 50 yards off the standing start, hammered down and she cleaned up nicely at 8-11,000 RPM, then hammered through 2-4, where I went WFO in 5th, then in 6th. We had a troublesome windy day on Sunday, with pocket gusts all over the main strip. Most notably in an area we call the wind tunnel which sits in between to large buildings and can throw 20-30 mile gusts at you from out of nowhere.

During the second pass we had this weird southerly tail wind, then a straight side gust about 3/4 miles down the line. I positioned the bike accordingly so I didn't get blown sideways to much and balled up as small as I could get to blast through the lights. It felt around 190ish, but when I picked up the timing slip, I was pretty happy. 202MPH, all motor baby!

It's hard to get too excited though as we had a rider go out the back door on Saturday, and that weighs heavily on me. But we all know the danger in LSR, and pushing the envelope on a bike can always end in an unfavorable way. You just keep your head in it, do your job, make your pass as safely as possible and hope it was with perfection.

A couple other Bay Area Racers did phenomenally well this weekend. Erin Sills rocked it in two different classes with great talent, safety and speed, Jim Higgins broke out on a 240+ pass on his blown bike to be the 2nd fastest bike of the event behind Ralph Hudson who pulled a 261 in blown fuel. And as stated, we did a solid 202 on all motor with heaviest production sportbike in class.

Next stop in the 2018 Season; El Mirage in May. I'll be looking for another record in the 1650 MPS/G Class and a shot at the Dirty 2 Club.

2018 is the last year I'll be riding this production/modified bike for points/records, our new blown fuel bike is almost ready, and I've got my heart set for 300MPH.
Cheers! --Papi

Congrats - very cool!

Do you just need to hit 200mph for a moment, or stay there for some time, what are the requirements ?

You have to do it through the timing lights. I got there at about a 1/4 before the mile and half lights, then you shut down. After that I have a mile to slow it down, and I typically burn it all. If I had a bit more room, 205 was easily in reach, so I'll go back to the Mojave in October and try again. Right now I need to get ready for the Dirty Mile at El Mirage which is on the El Mirage Dry Lake bed. I have 198.8 there, so I'll be looking for 200+ there in May.

Mojave is at the Mojave Air and Space Port in lovely Mojave California. It's a Space Port, home to Virgin Galactic, SpaceX and other new age Private Space programs. It is (I believe) the second longest operating runway in California next to Edwards AFB at 2.5 miles long. It was also the back up runway for the space shuttle (which did land there) if they blew Edwards by mistake. It's a private, no spectator event. The dry lakebed is at El Mirage, which is Northwest of Victorville California and east of Palmdale. It's a 1.3 mile track with a 1 mile shutdown, all in the dirt.
