what should I use (or alternatively, what do you use that works well)? I have a box of CD's (maybe 200?) I want to rip to mp3's. I tried google and didn't have much luck other than to determine I may not want to use windows media player which was my original idea.

I came across fre:ac on sourceforge and it seems like it would do the job but I'd like some real world advice/experience.

thanks

I just purchased Nero 3 at Frys for $9.99.

I'm hoping to use it for the same purpose as what you stated.

Out of curiousity, why not use Windows Media Player for this?

EAC performs much more accurate rps, often getting a bit-perfect copy. If the target is mp3, I wouldn't say it matters so much, but if you're ripping to a lossless format, it's nice to get as close to a perfect rip as possible.

right? the interface is kinda shitty, but it works..

^^^ yeah that's the one good reason.
The other one is, that after the "rip" the encoder included with EAC is higher quality too (which encoder BTW can be utilized separately as well) .. so yeah it matters for Mp3 too :dunno

Exact Audio copy.

Ditto! EAC is great and just works.

Done 100's of cds to flac with EAC.

oddly enough, EAC was the first thing I found, that looked good but I was scared off by a couple "bad" reviews of the latest version. I downloaded EAC and LAME and will give it a shot.

thanks everyone for your comments. :thumbup

Many audiophiles swear by Exact Audio Copy on Windows, also known as EAC, which incorporates advanced error correction features for near-perfect rips. You’ll also need to download the LAME MP3 encoder separately and provide it to EAC. CDex may not work quite as well as EAC, but may be simpler to use. Mac users should probably try Max, which also incorporates error-reduction features. LAME is the best-in-class MP3 encoder, and EAC, CDex, and Max can all use it.
