Well, I put my foot in my mouth on this...

I started looking into moving options back to Houston and HOLY HELL the rates from the Bay Area is Ridiculous!

With that being said, OP, what did you end up doing for your move?

A friend of mine is moving out of Pleasanton, to Utah, and was unable to rent a U-Haul truck. Too many people leaving the Bay Area. They rented one in Utah and drove it back to California to pick up their stuff.

I moved back to Oregon to be closer to family. I made multiple trips with Bikewanker's T100 truck until he threw a tantrum and made me buy my own.

(Kidding on the tantrum part, he was super generous with his truck.)

It was exhausting. I finally palletized the last bit of stuff and sent it LTL.

I may be putting my foot in my mouth a bit, but Depending on timing, I might be able to help. I have a truck and a car trailer. I need to take an engine to Oregon sometime in early 2021. I would be able to haul 2 bikes and a car easily.
Fees TBD.

Nice. I have the 90 ci kit on the firebolt and a regular old reliable lightning

I'm building a short stroke big bore 100" engine. That's actually what's going to Oregon. Baisley in Portland is going through the heads and helping me have the rods made. I'm using a tall deck stroker case so I can run long rods and get a 2:1 rod ratio. Chasing a 7000rpm big twin Harley because I'm stupid.

OP, you can thank CARB for my trip. S&S can't/won't ship any of the parts I need to California for fear of fines.

You do remember I live in Oregon, right?

We have cancelled the move and are staying in the bay area. I was reluctant on moving in the beginning, but knew it would help benefit someone out there immensely. As time went on, my gf started swaying on me, so we just scrapped the idea all together. And at this point, I don't even know where we are relationship wise, so I think it's for the best. But she needs to figure out what she wants to do, because I'm not involved in it. So I get to continue enjoying the year round riding, and I'm fine with that.

Well that's complicated... Hope it all works out for you.

I think I might just make a few trips down to Houston and chip away on the moving of things. Maybe I'll start with all my tools and motorcycles, then big furniture items, and the final move will be smaller/lighter items.

I'm still blown away with the costs of rentals out here and the PODS was a joke in cost savings. I find it funny that it costs so little to move here, but costs a fortune to get out of California.

I wonder how many native Californians are leaving the state, vs. transplants who've decided to try to find an equivalently fantastic place to live at a lower cost.

Well that's complicated...

Sums up my year. I'm better for it, rent is not much for me luckily, the cost of rent would have been slightly more, but the other factor was juggling a rental unit to fit my trailer and bikes, plus normal storage and cars as they expired until June, which was when I was planning on registering everything at once because that was another $1000 hit for 5 original registrations.

But yeah, honestly your best bet is buying a vehicle just to transport stuff and sell later. My final plan if everything worked out was taking a uhaul trailer all the way up there, and then bringing it back, way cheaper than one way, plus the truck was going to be borrowed.

Anyways, best of luck to those who are in unfavorable positions right now. I'm going to focus on finishing school now so I can have a degree ready by 2022. :thumbup

That would be interesting to find out. I was looking at other condos in my Daly City development from 10 years ago, and the rent costs have doubled since then. From an affordable $1800/month to $3400-$3600+
