Are KTM and Husaberg 2-stroke engines more reliable than Japanese 2-strokes?

Just seeking educated and experienced opinions:

My observations so far:

  • 2-ring pistons on EXC/MXC/XC/XCW models = less frequent piston ring changes. Doesn't apply to SX 1-ring pistons.
  • Seems like the KTM clutch (basket/hub/plates/springs) is the same as the CR125R/250R
  • KTM Powervalve adjustment on 125/150/200 models: no springs!
  • Keihin PWK38AG is a much more difficult to jet properly than PWK36 or Mikuni TMX38. Note: YZ250 still uses Keihin PWK38S.

And if we want to also address chassis and suspension:
  • WP PDS linkage-less rear suspension: a PITA to set up but no linkage or bearings to maintain
  • WP Front Forks = more stiction vs. Showa
  • +1 on single backbone CrMo frame: the fuel tank sits lower and has a lower Center of Gravity vs. Perimeter frames.

When in doubt gas it!
Here is my persoanl experience with the 2-stroke motors and some owners are biased because of their loyalty to brands so their opinion is neutralized. Both modern models Europe and Japanese bikes are very reliable if broken in properly and managed/maintenance as specified by the manufacturer, that said a lot of riders just put gas in them and run them untill they run like crap..whats wrong with my bike..duh. :toothless If the later is your style, and I assume at least the airfilter is cleaned every other month then sure Ktm's rule, I never had a Husaberg not sure there but the older models where notorious for breaking. If basic maintenance is done I see no difference between the 2-Strokes. My CR's YZ's and KX 250's all had two rings from what I remember and all of them went a full season with no rebuilds and I rode a lot and hard. My personal opinion on the most reliable smoker is the KTM300 hand down perfect balanced motor and you don't ring it out like a 250. This is my own personal experience.

I personally say maybe. I've seen better results from KTM's then any other rand except maybe some earlier Yamaha and Honda 2t's. Specifically around 01-03.

I prefer the KTM carb. I'm more familiar with it. Yamaha is similar. I actually end up using yamaha needles in the KTM carb. Little secret I learned from an old boss.

Modern PDS is just as good as a linked system and maybe even better imo. It's lighter and WP has put a really trick shock on there to make it work.

As for the forks the newer are about the same. My preference is is what I'm familiar with.
