Anyone Ride with Arthritis?

I think I have developing arthritis in my left hip joint and other areas. It has not been diagnosed as such yet, but that's my guess to what the problem is. Anyway, just wondering if anyone around here rides with arthritis and what they do to minimize any pain or discomfort. Exercise, stretching, yoga, diet, etc.? I'm not at all overweight, eat pretty well as far as healthy foods are concerned. I have limited my exercise to low impact and walking until I get this diagnosed, which may be a while out yet.

I've ridden and commuted everyday for about 5 years now and think it may be contributing to my situation (putting the joint into a position it doesn't like).

I don't want to quit riding due to this, but if it progresses that may be inevitibile. :thumbdown

I have a few knee issues, one is congenital, the others are sports injury related.

I stretch a lot before riding and on breaks. I also pop a few ibuprofen before heading out.

You might benefit from a different bike/riding position. I know that after riding my Duc for an hour I can barely walk. I did a 250 mile day on it and the next walked funny for about 5 hours the next day.

In my elbows. In my back. In my knee, but that was solved ?? By getting a metal knee.

My biggest issue is spinal stenosis. Essentially arthritis in the spinal column. That is the thing that is making me feel old. Surgery is dangerous. My cuz ended up crippled from it.

I am honestly scared, but if I go through another bout of F'd up back I may sign up and hope for the best.

Do the homio meds stuff. Can't hurt.

Good luck.

Having ridden with arthritis for quite some time now I find that low impact strength training such as swimming, walking up stairs and such help quite a bit.

If I know I'm going for a longish ride (over 100 miles) I dose with Advil before leaving. It helps. My knees and wrists are a problem (two critical joints when riding an MC), but what you going to do? Unless I'm in actual pain before a ride, I'll ride. I wake up aching sometimes.

I have it starting in my left hip. Just an occassional sharp pain in my left hip deep inside. But my old Ducati S4 had footpegs that were a little bit wider apart, than a lot of bikes, and it seems to aggravate it. After 250-300 miles, I was in some serious, sharp, pain. I would ride with my left leg and foot hanging down to just off the ground until things stopped hurting, then foot back on the peg and a short time later, it returned, pretty good pain. I never tried to dose up on Ibuprofen or Advil or Scooby Snacks (Norco). I had plans to make some footpeg/exhaust hangers that would have moved them in maybe 1.25 or 1.5 inches per side, which might have alleviated the angle or whatever was aggravating my hip, but I sold the bike before I got around to it. If I'm moving around, side to side, back and forth, not an issue, but slabbin' it, would bug the shit out of it.

So... yeah. My left hip was bone on bone for so long, it actually fused itself. X-rays look like the Elephant Man's head (not exaggerating). It's been non-stop pain, but it becomes background noise. In addition to riding street (about 12k a year, weekends only, good weather only), I started racing about 4 years ago.
So last summer, I began the process of moving... figured I'd move as much as I could with my trucks, and then hire movers for the heavy stuff. All that hiking back and forth, carrying heavy boxes, limping onto the good hip, was too much. Started getting pain in it, pretty uncomfortable... but I figured once the move was over, and I finished up the race season, I'd have all winter to rest up.
Didn't quite work out like that.
Left Round 6 (early October), got home, backed the trailer in, unhitched it, unloaded the truck, went to bed. Got up the next morning, and nearly went through the window... right hip WENT. I mean, agonizing pain, couldn't walk, missed several days of work.
Eventually got a cortisone injection, but I'm walking with a cane, can't stand or walk for very long (still raced the last round of AFM, though! :teeth ), and it's looking like hip replacement is on the horizon for end of this year.
I've found that taking glucosamine supplements (specifically Nutrilite's Twist Tubes have actually helped, as long as I take them daily. Strongly encourage you to take something similar (and it needs to be 1,500mg or it doesn't do anything), and avoid things like carrying heavy stuff (puts a lot of stress on the hip joints). I've got a collapsible utility wagon that's been a life saver. And if you run, stop. You're just pounding on your hip/knee joints.

It's impacted my ability to race, because I can't do all the pre-race stuff (unloading the trailer, setting up the bike, tire warmers on and off, all that), and my limited mobility since then has cost me a huge amount of muscle tone in my legs. But I can cycle, and just picked up a resistance stand so I can cycle every day in the house.
And I can ride street (just need to figure out how to stash a cane on a sportbike... :laughing ).
Nothing is going to keep me off the bikes... just gotta figure a workaround!
If I can do it, so can you!! :) :thumbup

If you see a doctor with a diagnostic ultrasound machine they may be able to show you the arthritis (if any) during your visit. I'm sure mine would, but you probably don't want to ride all the way up here to visit a doctor, with your hip hurting like that. Most doctors I've seen don't seem to have ultrasound imaging machines. It really makes a difference. Faster, cheaper and more effective than an MRI for many issues.

I have bicep tendonitis at the moment and the pain radiates around my bicep, tricep, deltoid, and neck. It definitely affects my ability to ride due to the riding position of the Ducati. I do PT & Chiropractic twice a month along with a daily set of stretches, TENS, icing, etc.
Right now I'm still on short rides around town and haven't yet tested the tendon in a track day. It sucks, but I'm doing everything I can to stay off medication and surgery, while staying active. I'm determined that this will not keep me off of my bike.

Make an appointment and see an arthritis doctor.
There are many newer treatments available that can slow and even stop permanent deterioration of the joints. Anti inflammatory medications can help with the stiffness.
Don't put off seeing a doctor and allow the damage to continue. Do not self diagnose let a professional figure out the best course of treatment.

Such as?

My sport medicine doctor is the one who diagnosed mine a few years ago (while viewing an ultrasound image of a tendon injury "you have arthritis there"), but I haven't seen anyone else about it.

I have it pretty much everywhere. Hands, elbows, knees, back, neck, you name it.

Ibuprofen daily keeps the inflammation down. I take codeine once or twice a month when it's so bad I can't sleep.

What I have discovered helps the most is exercise. Walking, bicycle riding, weights, leg exercises, squats, and crunches. While this seems counter intuitive, when I exercise regularly the problems are minimal. I have to watch to not do too much weight, it kills my knuckles on the curls, and my elbows.

I don't drink caffeine anymore or drink anymore.

pretty much this-stationary bike, elliptical, lots of repeatitions with very light weight.sitting around makes it worse.quitting alcohol really seems to help.

+1 on elliptical, low impact exercise

+100 on surgery fears: doc said they'll go thru the FRONT to access my spine :wow

I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis at the ripe old age of 45. Being heavy didn't help and probably sped what appears to be a "family gene" ( all male relatives in my family have it ). I started having symptoms before I turned 40, but shrugged it off as "back pain".

I have memorized every crack and bump in 680 - so I know when I need to stand on the pegs so I can keep the pain at bay and ride throughout the week. Lane splitting (the slower speed) helps... :ride

Go get diagnosed ASAP - find a decent orthopedic who with not f*ck around and start giving you oral steroids and anti-inflammatories. This took me from 10-12 Advil a day and non-functional (almost bed ridden) to being able to get up and walk around enough to loosen things up: and sleep! and drive! and work!

So now when I get an episode of disc or nerve pain, I use Celebrex or Etodolac for about 2-3 weeks - and I'm almost normal again. I can't you tell how much it's completely changed my world. Good Luck.

My right wrist has been bugging me as of late. Osteoarthritis from an old sports injury. I have been using glucosamine + fish oil and ibuprofen to control inflammation. I try my best to keep up on PT, it keeps things "loose" I guess.

Neck? If so, I'm in the same boat. Some neck pain and a numb left hand. I think there's going to be trouble ahead.

I (in addition to arthritis all over the place) have Stenosing tenosynovitis in both hands. Source:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stenosing_tenosynovitis

It's my biggest problem that limits movement of the fingers. I can no longer twist a grip, grab a brake, or spin the throttle. Thus, I've been off bikes a couple years now as the bike's having braking, carb/tank fuel crud problems.

All the other issues I could live with & perhaps take short rides, but this one prevents everything. Especially the ability to twist a wrench. Thus, the bike sits in the garage gathering dust cuz I can't fix it w/non working fingies. It's taking a lot of pain to just type messages w/o mistakes...

Hopefully someday...(sigh)...I remain an enthusiast...:thumbup

A chronic knee injury makes it tough for me to ride more than an hour or so w/o getting off the bike and doing a stretch and a walk... coincidentally as I've gotten older that's also about the longest I can go w/o taking a piss too so it all works out pretty well.
