Anybody else doing the Lost Coast Dual-sport ride? (Oct 3-4)

So, I'm signed up for this ride in October and I was wondering if any other BARFers are planning on doing it. It would be cool to get a little BARF group together. :thumbup

i would but i dont have the range

What kind of range do you have? There are gas stops along the way.

I've never done the ride before, but I believe it includes as much dirt as possible, with the street riding just there to connect the dirt sections.

There's a little more info at http://www.northbaymc.org/

Well, I wouldn't mind doing it with a couple of other people, since I don't really like to ride alone.

stock husky 510 tank, maybe 60-70 miles max

Yeah, that may not be enough. If you email them, I'm sure they can tell you how far apart the gas stops are. It probably wouldn't be a big deal to bungee a 1-gallon gas can onto your rear fender if you had to. When I did the Sheetiron, I carried a siphon hose and a plastic bottle in case I had to bum gas from somebody, but I never needed it.

"Your motorcycle must be street legal, insured, meet current 96db sound requirements and make 100 miles between fuel stops."

Well, sure. It's obvious if you actually read.
:laughing:blush

Again, a 1-gallon gas can or a siphon hose should get you that far.

I'm pretty sure it will have hard (single track) and easy (fire roads) splits so you can choose your level of difficulty. I'll probably do some of each.

Yep, I did it last year on an XR600r with a stock tank (about 80 miles to reserve on pavement, less on dirt). I carried 3 quarts of fuel in my pack, and I got a bit more from a friend at one point (due to my own bad planning, missing a fuel stop). It's a great ride, much more scenic than the sheetiron.

The first day last year was pretty long- about 250 miles, almost all dirt, and it took our group about 12 hours (messing around and having fun, getting lost). They say they're doing more dirt and less pavement this year, so be prepared for two full days of riding- bring plenty of food and water and spare tubes.

Times like this I wish I had a dual sport or SM. :( I am planning a ride to Avenue of the Giants and Lost Coast but it will be all pavement. :cool

Sounds like fun, but I'm out of vacation time, saving them for my Baja trip.

i'm assuming it's all doable on the 990?
i did the lost coast from north to south the first day i bought my 990. All of it was more than doable except for one super slick muddy section which was pretty brutal.

i may try this on the 990.

Last year, the first day went north on the east side of 101, through a lot of Mendocino national forest. A big KTM could ride the easy splits, and most of the hard splits with a decent rider. You would definitely want knobby tires for the hard splits, and someone to help you pick up your bike.

Second day there were no hard/easy splits, and the route would be fine for big bikes.

I'll probably be riding my DRZ- it's just more fun on singletrack, and I don't want to pass up good trail because I'm skeered of dragging my 500 lb bike through it.
