any witnesses ? Hwy 280 on 11/8/17 10AM

Don't expect much luck here, but thought I'd post anyway ...

I went down on 280, S bound near Page Mill, about 10AM on 11/8/17. Clear, dry, light traffic. One minute I'm puttin' along at about 65mph, next thing I know I'm waking up in an ambo on the way to Stanford Hospital. Released yesterday, home now, eight broken ribs right side, and broken fingers on both hands. Small scuff on my helmet R side, and various small tatters on my gear.

ATGATT.

I remember hearing a minor noise from the left side, and the bike ('09 BMW F800GS) seemed to stumble like it was missing. Don't remember going down or sliding, or an "Oh shit ..." moment.

Still haven't seen the bike. No idea what happened ... I don't suppose there was any BARFers to witness the event?

CHP card said the bike was towed to Bill's Towing in Mtn. View; Bill's has some perty bad reviews on Yelp, any love here?

I'm sorry this happened to you and wish you a good recovery.

I would suspect one of three things;

1) You were hit by something.

A bike inspection is in order if and when you can get your hands on it. Look for signs of having gotten hit or sideswiped, especially on the left side where you felt something.

2) Catastrophic mechanical failure.

Again you'll need to get hold of the bike. How's the belt/chain? Any broken spokes/wheels? Does the bike roll? Does the engine turn over? Is the tranny locked up? Are the wheels installed correctly? Etc. Etc.

3) Rider medical "event".

If the bike checks out then you have to consider that you may have had some sort of "black-out" while riding. Is there evidence that you tried to break your fall (e.g. are the palms of your gloves scraped)? Maybe that's where the broken fingers came from?

If it doesn't look like you made any attempt to break your fall then maybe you were unconscious before you hit the ground. If so then you have to look at your age, medical history, hydration level when it happened (e.g. hungover?), any new medications or recent changes in dosage, etc. How were you feeling overall that day? Strong and healthy? Fighting the flu? How long has it been since you had a full physical?

Good luck. I hope you don't mind sharing what you find.

Shit, head injuries are serious business. I hope you heal up well.

Get the bike out as soon as you can, I was charged $85/day when I got hit (plus the tow fee).

Wow no witnesses?
Scarry to not know what the heck happened.
Heal up and get at that bike.

Glad to see you posting about it, instead of something else.

I have been down, hard, just once, and when you get punted hard enough, there is a good chance you won't recall some details.

My guess?: Someone hit you, and fled the scene. There are a lot of Psychopaths on 280, at all times of day. Expensive, fast cars, with clueless, self-centered shitheels yakking on iPhones that are squarely in front of their entitled faces.
A few weeks ago someone passed me on the right, even though the 2 lanes to My Left were 100% clear, at WAY over 100mph (like 115-ish or more is my guess), and I could feel the suction of his draft pulling me sideways. A lot of that going on.

Anyway, glad you lived!

Dude!!! Ditto on seeing you post.

So many busted ribs. Ouch! X 8.

Hope this all comes together for you and a full recovery is not to far into the future.

When I got hit on the Bay Bridge a couple years ago, the guy took off. A witness chased him down, tried to get him to stop, he didn't. He then reported the car stolen and denied that he had been driving it (it was "recovered" with no damage beyond the dent from me - no forced entry, no ignition damage).

Does anyone know if the San Mateo county 911 Dispatch will tell me if someone called it in?

Thanks again to all who've replied.

I wouldn't suspect that they would.

Was a report taken? I'd assume so, since injuries were involved.

If the witness/person who called in gave their information, it will be on the report. Make sure to get a copy as soon as it's available.

I got a look at my bike and gear yesterday. It seems pretty obvious that one of my dry bags got loose, did a 180 and then a 90 down under the muffler, and then went under the rear wheel. Presto change-o, el down-o, prontito.

Several good Samaritans stopped to assist me, and their contact info was in the CHP report. I called and thanked them, one of them said he saw the bag come loose and he said I did a heroic job trying to avoid the inevitable. Good to know that I'm still a studly rider ...

Good to know also that there's still people that will stop and try to help a stranger in trouble.

Yeah dude I had a lowside in the rain in Mississippi one night went down slide like 50 feet. Couple people stopped to help me and later another dude checked up on me. Was totally worried I'd get run over when it happened because it was really dark.
