Any (4-wheel) Overland types in here?

As I'm getting older and bad knees and hips are forcing me away from two-wheel adventures I'm getting my adventuring done on four wheels instead.

On the plus side, I get to take the dog and a whole lot more gear out there with me. No more counting ounces trying to maximize each cubic inch out of my saddle bags. :laughing

Sound off! Let's see your rigs and your trips!

I want a 10-12 Range Rover someday. Preferably with the SC. And yes, if I ever get one, it will be taken off road. :D

Nice, what shape was Usal in? I went there 3 years ago and am thinking of going back. Did you drive out the road north? I have a 94 toyota 22re pickup 2wd.

Thanks! All except one (the long-exposure night shot) were taken with the iPhone X. If you’re on Instagram I’m @_scorpiovi in there.

I see an antenna. Any ham setup?

Nah. CB for now. Mainly just want to talk to guys I’m convoying and wheeling with. A few guys have been on my case to get a license but it sounds like a hassle.

Great pics. Looks like you (and your dog) upgraded from your truck tent.

No Morse code requirement anymore so the test only takes a day to cram and test. http://www.baears.com

With IRLP and DMR you can hit world wide with just a Tech license.

I have a friend who got way into it and the "community." He spent a ton building up a rig, then teamed up with a guy to start a business. Guy played him and stole the business and left my friend with nothing but thousands of dollars lost and a new sense of betrayal.

I have a lifted 4x4 that I like to take to remote areas for camping and recreation. But the whole "overlanding" scene seems very heavily gear focused and a lot of dick measuring based on who's got what kit.

Maybe you found a cooler crew. Your pics do make it look like you're having a great time

my experience has been the opposite. it’s been a long time since my SO and i had 4x4’s but we were totally into it at the time. some of my best memories were with awesome friends out off roading. we’d go deep into the back country, exploring, shooting, cooking awesome meals over the fire. often times in deep snow. with great friends, our families and our dogs. good times. i’m not sure i could say life has ever been any better than that.

The wheelin I grew up doing with friends isn't what today's Overlanding is. I'm not saying it's not fun, but there seems to be a difference in culture around the activity.

Went over a small rise and never saw the washout on the other side. Luckily the gravel road behind me was well traveled, and a Subaru gave me a tug.

To me, the original idea of overlanding was an attempt to copy the "explorer" ideals.
Camping is "for the destination".
i.e. "We're going to the lake and spending the weekend..."

Overlanding is "for the journey".
i.e. " We're going to take this trail, and see where it goes. we're aiming for______ to be reached in a few days".

But it definitely seems to have become a new fashion show! :wow

Sorry I missed this last night. Road was fine. So fine a WRX made it to the campground. Just a few ruts on the way. Didn’t go north of the beach, and one of the locals said it was a shitshow.

Only had the truck tent while I was waiting for my shell to get built (took 7 weeks). It served its purpose though. But the shell offers a lot more security and discretion.
