Another credit card thread

Yes I know, there have been a few over the years here in the sink. This one about airline miles was pretty good.

But, CC perks, points, miles, and bonus programs change pretty regularly it seems. Earlier this year Citi practically gutted most of the benefits from their cards. Because of that and along with the release of the Apple Card, I’ve done a lot of looking into credit card programs in the past couple months to see what I should keep in the wallet and what should just go in a drawer. I’m sure many of you are frequent fliers so airline cards are probably your go tos. Some of you like “points” and some just like straight up cash back. So I’m curious to what’s in your wallets.

What I have:

Citi/AA Advantage. Was my first airline card. Had a whole bunch of miles as a sign up bonus which was essentially worth $7-800 or so. And have added a bunch more over the years. Can pretty much fly my wife and I to London and back for free at this point. But the aforementioned cutting of benefits by Citi and the $149 (I think) annual fee might have me cancel this one soon.

Chase/Southwest. This one made more sense for me. The majority of my flights have been on Southwest. So of course I book all Southwest flights now with this card. Also had a great sign up bonus to get a head start on the mileage bank. They always have various bonuses (10% off Petsmart, 5% off Starbucks, etc) you can load on there every month. And the annual fee is pretty cheap.

Apple Card. Because it’s titanium. Well yeah that’s cool, but that’s not the only reason I got it. If there’s no merchant specific bonus I get from another card available, and they take Apple Pay, the 2% immediately back is fairly straightforward. And buying stuff from Apple directly like renting a movie on iTunes or the very phone I’m typing this on, 3% back is pretty solid.

Amex Gold & Everyday cards. So the gold Amex is my newest one. The $250 annual is a bit ridiculous to me. But this will be my new food card. 4x points at all US supermarkets and global restaurants was the draw here. Plus 50k points sign up bonus. Decent benefits. The Everyday card is no annual fee and sometimes they have member offers that are really legit. Recently I got $100 back for $500 spent at MGM resorts. Points are nothing special though you can get 1.5x in a month if you use the card 30 times....meh not worth it. But no annual fee and some member benefits are available to that one that aren’t on the gold, so it’s worth keeping in the wallet.

But that’s all I use. What about everyone else? I know the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Amex Platinum are great if you fly a lot and on different airlines. The Costco one is great if you go there a lot. And the Amazon Prime one seems like a no brainer getting 5% back if you’re a Prime member.

I use two USAA cards, one for cashback, both are zero yearly charge.
One Chase, zero yearly
One LL Bean master, zero yearly, LL bean bucks
One AMEX platinum zero yearly.

I never pay yearly fees and pay off monthly

Ok how’d you manage that? I looked into it for a second mostly for the prestige of just having one (and it’s a thick AF metal card), but it’s benefit package is really geared toward world travelers with the whole 5x points on air travel thing. I could give a fuck about Centurion Lounge access. So it wasn’t even close to being worth $550 a year to me. But I’d gladly take one for free. How?

funny u start this
was just reviewing the city price rewind terms and looks like it was canceled as of sept

meh

Yeah Citi really fucked themselves. They had some good cards, but not so much anymore.

Oops, no, not Platinum, just the standard.

The Chase Amazon Prime card is also great if you're spending time overseas. No currency conversion fee, no annual fee, 5% back on Amazon, 2% back on gas and some other things, 1% back on everything else.

By the way Chase cards and some others do not have tap-and-pay, however if you load them into the Google Pay app then they magically do with your phone. This is faster and more secure than swiping or using the chip.

My Chase Southwest has contactless. Matter of fact, there was some email I got last week where if I did three tap to pay transactions by whatever date I’d get 500 Southwest points.

It’s a little hectic juggling the whole rewards and where do I use them thing. But I think of it as coupons that are always on me to get free money. And I never use actual coupons for anything at like a Safeway or whatever, mainly because I hate having to remember to bring them and then making sure I get the specific item the coupon covers.

My chase sapphire has tap to pay.

Also the Chase Sapphire is 'better' than the Chase Southwest card. You still earn Chase points and you can transfer them 1:1 to Southwest, and you get a way better bonus when you hit spending limit, and you can also transfer CUR points to basically anything else 1 to 1 as well.

I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Not willing to spend the 450 annually on a Reserve.

Damn. Had me excited there. Those metal cards...just something about them. The gold Amex is metal. But the platinum is thicker. Knowing that really makes me want it even though it’s benefit package does me almost no good other than maybe the TSA Pre Check credit.

Fun fact. The JP Morgan card is the heaviest of the metal cards. Used to be called the Palladium card, because I imagine it was maybe made out of that metal. Just like the Amex Centurion (Black) card, it’s invite only. And you need a minimum of $10M parked in Chase Private Client holdings to be considered for invitation.

Oh wow that’s nice. Just looked into it a bit more. Damn, that’s really the “airline” one I really should have gotten all along. 1:1 with not just Southwest, but United, Virgin, JetBlue, and several others. Along with IHG, Marriot, and Hyatt points too.

Damn that’s a really solid benefit there.

I have referrals! :D

it is pretty sweet though. I transferred points to southwest and went roundtrip to dallas for like 12 bucks, cause you have to pay tax still.

I've flown United enough times now that I have points with them that I haven't even really tried to get, and its enough to comp me TSA Precheck.

Between the Apple and the Amex I got in the past few months, I want to let my credit stabilize a bit before going for yet another card. But if you have a referral link in maybe six months I’ll gladly use it.

Me two, all my life.
A Citi double and a Discover and some others too. I try to minimize the number of cards used to minimize the bills to pay and keep track of.

You don't need to transfer anymore to Southwest from Chase. You can book direct again, and you earn rapid rewards points, companion, etc, that you otherwise wouldn't by transfer.

Fidelity has a rewards card you can tie to a brokerage account.

Basically a percentage of whatever you spend gets automatically tossed into your 401k/IRA or whatever you decide to stuff it into.

I have one and have been happy with it.

Same here. Got mine using MikeV's link, I use it for airlines, hotels, and restaurants, and it's added up quickly since I don't have a company card now. :thumbup
