AMA SupermotoWest announces Round 8 at Shasta Kart Track just south of Redding, CA. This track was recently repaved. It has a great layout with a fun dirt section.

Round 9 has been moved from Buttonwillow, to Sonoma with a date change to October 15. Details for both events will be posted as we get closer to the events.

I'm glad to hear that there will be another Sonoma day, I'm hoping to race that... I need to figure out what it'll take for me to race (I haven't before).

I'm happy to answer any questions about getting ready for your first race day whether its about bike prep, gear, class structure, what to bring to the track or anything else.

Bike is prepped (or at least it had an AMA sticker on it from before I bought it - has sliders on both axles, peg sliders, handguards, catch can), I have gear (1 piece, Sidi Crossfire 2 SRS, Helimot gloves... what are the requirements for helmet, does it need SNELL 2010 or is ECE ok?), the only thing I can think of that I don't have is a generator (trackdays there generally have power available so I haven't bothered). I've done a fair number of trackdays there (although not in a couple months).

It's a 450 so I need to figure out if there's some sort of novice class.

You're in good shape. Is oil fill and oil drain plug safety-wired? If neither is drilled for safety wire you can use a healthy dose of silicon sealant for your first race weekend but safety wire is preferred. Make sure all controls such as brake and shift levers are securely bolted on. If you haven't nut and bolted the bike for a while it would be a good idea since 4-stroke singles can vibe things loose.

Tech won't check your gear or helmet spec but the grid marshall will glance to check you have decent boots (road or dirt are OK), gloves and goggles if you are using a dirt helmet. Street helmets is good condition are OK. Its unlikely you will have access to electricity on a race weekend so borrow a generator. Tire warmers aren't absolutely necessary in the Beginner or Novice classes as you usually get at least one warm up lap before each heat and main. If you have race winning pace in the Pro or Vet classes tire warmers matter more. Its not the AFM. No one going 130mph and you're supposed to use the rear brake and even slide in supermoto so tires will get up to temp quickly.

I understand there may be Saturday practice for the Sonoma and Redding rounds but its not locked down yet. There may even be a supermoto school.

Don't expect much practice on race day. Likely two sessions of 5 minutes or less. Practice groups vary depending on turnout but usually are grouped as follows: Pro - Vet/Intermediate/ - Novice/Beginner - minis. Again, the groups shuffle depending on how many people show up in each class. Practice groups are names A, B, C, D but may not go in that order so pay attention the to board at tech to determine your practice group and the PA system for announcements on when your practice group is called to pre-grid.

You get a heat and a main event for every class you enter. Race grids and race order are posted after the post-practice Riders Meeting. We run the heats, take a short break and then run the mains in the same order as the heats. Note which race is before your race(s) so can be ready to get to the pre-grid in plenty of time. If you can afford, run more than one class. Most people do two or three classes which means four to six races (including heats and mains) on a race day.

The supermoto crowd is friendly bunch and everyone remembers being a new racer so introduce yourself and get to know the paddock. Some my best friends in supermoto are people I met on my first or second race weekend.

Racing is ten times more fun than track days so don't forget you are there to have fun and you will get the most out of it.

I'm going to try to be there for the Sonoma weekend announcing or taking photos. If there is a team race, I might even suit up and race. We met when I bought those rain tires from you so I'll try to find you.

Yes, they're safety wired. I'll make sure to check everything.

How much does it cost?

Supermoto trackdays are certainly friendly, the races I've been to have seemed friendly too.

Entry fees can change based on the venue (and cost to operate at that venue). I'll post up as soon as online registration is live for these events.

Schedule posted for the Redding race at Shasta Kart Track. Race entry is $60/per race. $30 for Saturday evening practice 4:00pm-7-30pm. The short Sunday morning practices are included with race entry fee. Each race entry includes one heat race and one main event. $20 Gate pass covers both days. Will need an AMA membership to race to the AMA classes.

The kart track is on the back (east) side of the airport between Redding and Cottonwood. Its a great track with fresh repave one or two years ago and has a good mix of fast and slow corners with two straights. Dirt section is pretty long with a lot of variety. I've raced there once and loved the layout.

Please NOTE: The pricing above is for pre-registration online and maybe as much as $5 additional per race entry when registering at the track. Online pre-registration is encouraged because it helps set practice groups and race grids more quickly on race day.

I don't have exact pricing or information on additional exhibition classes for Sonoma yet. Its a safe bet pricing will be similar and there will be some asphalt-only exhibition classes.

Do I need an ama membership if I just do exhibition classes? I've been in a rebuilding year or so, but would love to come back out and join the fun for the last round.

I really wish I could make it, turns out I have a rally the same weekend that I'd already agreed to (and forgotten about).

I hope I at least make it to a race next year...

Now that Dixon is doing moto days you should look into there too.

Yes the AMA membership and license are required. This is an AMA sanctioned series so all racers must have AMA memberships to meet sanction and insurance requirements.

Round 9 to be rescheduled due to the ongoing fire emergencies in the North Bay.

Brok just posted this on the AMA SupermotoWest Facebook page:

As a result of the devastating fires in the Sonoma area, we have decided to postpone the races this weekend. Our thoughts are with those families that have been effected. We would like to suggest that you consider redirecting your race entry fee to a local charity or shelter for those displaced.

Our hope is to have a replacement date for the final round of the 2017 Championship series ASAP. Thank you for your understanding and support.
