Hi All,

So I was just lane splitting down Geary in SF. Went in between a truck and a small car (Hyundai or something). Really tight squeeze. One of those where the guy in the car saw me, and did nothing to help in any way - not even a slight movement of his hands to give me a bit of room. So I was stuck there waiting for the light to change…

When it changed, the truck took it's time, and the car started to go. Well - I was so close that he ALMOST ran over my foot - I mean, I pulled my foot up JUST as it was about to be run over. I could feel my foot hit the ground AND his rear wheel. I'm SURE that I dodged a big painful bullet.

Has anyone here ACTUALLY had their foot run over in this way? If so, what was the result? Broken foot bones?

- Jon

Yep, a minivan got my foot. No injury. Didn't really even hurt, just pressure.

Howe about not just assuming that the world revolves around you. You don't always need to be first and the rest of the public doesn't need to go out of their way to accommodate you.

Not trying to be harsh, but if you didn't have this attitude, you wouldn't be posting this thread. There is something inherently wrong with motorcyclists' attitude in the bay area. We feel entitled. Bikes should move over for us, cars should move over, trucks should get out of our way. Going slower in front of us, move the fuck over. Want to go fast than us, oh well I'm a motorcyclist, wait your turn.

Hell just the other day I'm driving a rental car in traffic on the bay bridge. Some asshole on a busa decides to squeeze his way through the lanes. Fine. I ALWAYS give people room. However, he still managed to hit my mirror really goddam hard (on a rental car so I would have to pay to fix it). Did he stop? No. Because obviously I should have seen him coming and pulled my mirror in or something.

Lose the entitlement and this incident would never have happened. You simply should not have split between those vehicles. Your post clearly states that there wasn't enough room. Yet you did. And when the guy drove off, it's his fault?

You'd probably be better off not expecting any car to ever do anything but put you in danger. I know we've all ended up in shitty spots while splitting, but hopefully this is a learning lesson for you to stay out of such tight spaces.

Have you seen the video of the guy in Russian who falls over low speed and gets eaten up by a trucks wheels? That certainly made me think twice about some of the ways and places I split.

Glad to see you made it out with all your piggies.

The lesson is to leave yourself an escape route. Really tight squeeze= no way out. Don't put yourself in the situation.

Once again, not trying to be harsh but: "Went in between a truck and a small car (Hyundai or something). Really tight squeeze. You could have just stopped. Why does the guy in the car need to accommodate you? Let's play devil's advocate here. You're on a moto at a light in the left side of your lane. A giant monster truck with a Prius body and 32 inch wheels comes up behind you and edges up next to you as if to share your lane. Should you:

A. Hold your ground.
B. Move over and let him squeeze into your lane.

Why go between two vehicles when you know there's not enough room to get past them? You put yourself in that situation. You're not going to get much pity in this thread.

Not as fast as I look.
I move over for motorcycles as well. When people see me splitting, they have a choice. It would have been nice for him to give me a bit of latitude, but he didn't, and I almost paid the price.
You are still making it his responsibility. Bad move. I don't expect any help from drivers, especially on the streets with rather narrow lanes and cross traffic and such. Streets are dangerous, m'kay? Especially in a tight, busy city like S.F..

Seasoned.
Was it Geary/Downtown, Geary/Inner/Outer-Richmond? The construction of "would have been nice" varies greatly with knowing an exact location.

Dude, your mistake could have landed you in the hospital or morgue. :rolleyes

They ARE out to get you, and if you haven't figured that out yet, you should sell the bike.

OP got butt-hurt that nobody agrees he got a bad deal from other road users :facepalm

anyone remember that quote ( I think it came from Connie ) about barfers being understanding folks, but don't expect us to validate dumb behavior

OP, try not to get too bent if you don't get the reaction you thought you would. We really are a "tough love" sorta crowd :blush (and yes, other barfers have told me where to go and how fast to get there... and rightfully so :( )

Op,
I apologize if I came across like an asshole. It is one of the pet peeves I have on BARF that we can be really harsh. And I think I jumped right ion with both feet.

But your post did come across as sort of a "why didn't he get out of my way" thread. Perhaps you didn't mean it that way. But I think my point is valid no matter how harsh it came across. Don't expect anything but grief from other users of our roadways. Don't expect it and don't act like you deserve it (not saying you are acting this way it's a general statement).

When you realize that nobody cares about us you will have far less of these events. I used to ride much more aggressively with an expectation that people cared about my safety. Then I had someone try to kill me. Like actually run me down and try to kill me. In fact they were convicted (of a much lesser charge).

Now I ride like anything can happen at any time and I am the only one that can do anything to save my life. I simply don't have these issues anymore.

OP - while this thread is harsh, it has the best possible intentions.

Don't walk away without listening to what is being said. Never, ever make it another road user's responsibility to ensure you have a safe exit strategy.

While most other road users (there are a few exceptions) don't intend to endanger you, most are too oblivious/incompetent or indifferent to help you out when you get into a squeeze.

The harshness comes from seeing too many fellow riders lost, the intentions of everyone posting are to keep you from being another one.

if you can't fit don't split

and "fit" means fit safely, not squeezed in with nowhere to go
