Aerohump

Besides any aerodynamic benefits, is there a safety aspect to them? Do they keep your head off the ground in a get-off? Do I need an aerhump?

At a trackday last week it felt like the back of my helmet was "catching" on the aerohump, thereby rotating my helmet as I turned my head to look to the next reference point. Not confidence inspiring...

It all about aero and maybe to keep you head centered. Other than that if you were on the ground with a broken neck it would do more harm having the hump because it puts your neck at an unnatural position and "kinks" it. So cool wise, its needed. Medically wise, its not that good.

My thoughts are that it helps keep your head off the ground in the event of a lowside. Don't want your helmet scraping and bouncing off of the ground when the hump can keep your head elevated enough to avoid that. Just my :2cents

ive slid a long way on my back and ended up w/ a helmet w/ zero scuffs. the hump was scuffed pretty good, so it def held my back up a little. maybe i also held my head up, maybe not.

i disagree. lie down on your back w/ a helmet and hump. my neck feels a lot straighter with the hump than without it because the helmet has some thickness.

Thank you for the replies. Anyone feel like the back of their helmet was catching on the hump?

Along with aero, there are humps with venturi effect ventilation features and some with hydro pack storage. Not all humps were created equally.

As far as the helmet catching, I have never had this problem, but I have a friend who did due to a short neck and riding posture. I think he modified it through a custom leather repair place.

While mostly aero, I'm pretty sure the reason I'm still walking and talking on my own is due to my aero hump - judging by gear damage it seems to have saved me from snapping my neck.

Can't say that I've had issues with either of my suits catching on my helmet, but I have heard that complaint from the occasional person, but guessing a combination of body positioning, suit brand and helmet brand all factor into that being an issue.

The hump on my suits, yes I've ruined a few, do not keep my head in an unnatural position, "kinks it" doesn't seem to be a medical term I'm familiar with but maybe I just missed it somewhere.
