Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

In preparation for the upcoming 2nd Sunday Ride, I got some info from SFMCJohn and headed up to Buck Island Campground this past weekend.

That's an amazing area as I'm sure you all already know. It was my first time there, and I'm always on the lookout for BLM that's close to SF, especially with most dispersed camping not allowed in National Forests at the moment.

Berryessa/Knoxville Rd is super fun. Everything is pretty burned out, though. For the most part, everything is windy/grass-burned - burned through too quick to take out the trees. But a lot of black. Up closer to Buck Island, it's like Road 40 is a cutoff. Everything south of Road 40/Fiske Creek Rd is burned, everything north of Road 40 towards Buck Island escaped the fires.

I was the only one at Buck Island. Originally I wasn't going to stay at the spot SFMCJohn spoke of because of rocks, but after checking out the rest of the area, I really wanted that part of the river's white noise, so I found a place for the tent in that area. So many bats swirled around in that little area of water like crazy for about an hour as the sun went down - icing on the cake!

The trash was disappointing - I filled quarter of a 4gal bag from that campsite before I left. Bathrooms were unlocked, but there were too many legged critters hanging around to entertain any idea of using them.

Found a few cool places that are campable on the Fiske Lake (pond) side of Road 40, but I figured it was best to stay out of the blackened stuff.

It's going to be a fun ride on the 10th if it takes place. In any case, I'll go (weather and fires permitting).

Thank you SFMCJohn and BARF!

Thanks bananachunks, great pics and especially the vids, think they give a real good idea of what the fire roads are like! :thumbup

sorry to seek Fiske Pond looking so burnt ... looks like you got as far up Fiske Road as I ever have, that's looking burnt, too. Catfish on ADV says there's a locked gate up there somewhere ...

Anyway, the new wildfires around Santa Rosa and the extreme heat is a concern ... Buck Island looks the same in your pics, for now though.

Thanks for posting and hope to see you 10/10 ... :thumbup

That map was exactly what I was looking for, it adds a lot clarity to the orders. Thanks!

+1! Great map ... :ride

My recent experience with Stanislaw NF/Sonora Pass/Silver Creek was they opened it back up after the rain on Friday, 09/18 ...

Here are a few from a recent ride near the Bodie area. Lance already posted a picture of The Cabin under a Rock.

Waiting on a train near Greyson.

great pic ... need to figure out where this is on the way to Bodie from the Hawthorn/Aurora cemetery side ...? don’t think you go through what I call Aurora Canyon, east of Bodie ...

thanks for posting, enjoyed the SBR pics, too ... :ride

John, I think these roads have forest service numbers. I’ll see if I can find them.

instead of adding pollution to the Second Sunday thread, guess I'll post my Buck Island overnight KLR prep here.

so, tried to ride the KLR a couple days ago, and it failed to start. went into the garage today to wrestle it to the ground, and got it to start after finding the battery ground a bit loose.

that's an issue I've had in the past. anyway, tightened that up and it started right up. when I got to work, noticed the headlight getting brighter as I gave it gas. couldn't remember about that, so went to the local shop and they loaned me a load tester:

the shop assured me that the headlight getting brighter was normal, but let me use their load-tester to make sure I don't have a battery issue:

bad pic, but looks like I'm good to go ... :ride
nice thing about a pre-Gen KLR, is they run with a dead battery, but still.

rode the bike to work, and will ride it home in an hour, and then start to pack for Saturday ...
found my fishing pole, so going to bring that, and my new frying pan. we'll see how that goes.

anyway ... that's my progress, today. bike seems to be running. ha. :toothless

If the headlight went brighter with increasing RPM I would be concerned of an alternator or regulator problem, which may strand you in the middle of nowhere.

Home of Vortex tuning
This is normal lighting before fuel injection.
The battery would help at idle because the alternator isn't spun up enough @ 600 rpm
With FI, the alternator has to be providing full stable voltage @ a high idle @ 1200 rpm
