ADV/DS ride Lake Berryessa/Knoxville OHV/Rayhouse Rd.

hopefully some Sunday people will chime in ... be cool to try to have the Saturday campers meet up with the Sunday ride, somewhere ...

maybe someone who has done a Sunday day ride can give me some idea when they usually get to the crossroads of Buck Island Road and Rayhouse Road?

anyway, we'll be in the area on Sunday, just not sure where we'll be at what time ... can always try to post up a link to my SPOT, or maybe bananachunks, too ... :ride

Is this obstacle still on Reiff?

Man, that was knargl!

The road's had a lot of work. Most everything is in decent shape. :thumbup

Leo_jb! w00t! should probably PM him now, to say we're planning on going. We'd talked about a Buck Island trip years ago, but never got around to it.

looks like March, 2017, maybe? I certainly didn't have any trouble when I was through there a year ago, and bananachunks didn't report any issues.

agree with wheel_muse, lots of bulldozer evidence fixing the fire roads when I was there ...

Okay I'm in for the Sunday ride, and happy to lead it as one of the original OGs
:afm199 who started this crazy ride almost a decade ago (really all Sid's and Drew's fault :teeth)

My one change is start time: let's plan on KSU @ 9:30am Sunday at the Cordelia Starbucks...will give more time for those of us far away to get there.

Please post up here if you're planning to join us, and let us know your bike and dirt experience; I would say it's not noob-friendly if it's the very first time riding a big adv bike in the dirt, but much depends on your skill level, dirt conditions, bike and of course tires. Sounds like Reiff road might be pretty mellow with the noted bulldozer work.

9:30am departure from Cordelia should put us at the Knoxville OHV south entrance around 11am, and I'd estimate we should be at the top of Reiff Rd @ the cutoff to Buck Island sometime between 12:30-1:30pm. With the poser bridge parking lot closed (which sucks; great stopping point), we will look for an area/pull off somewhere past the bridge for a 10min quick break.

Read the first post and follow the links for more general info, or post up here with your questions...hope to see some old-timers as well as new riders in attendance on Sunday!

Bring, tools, water and food; no real options to buy anything until we reach Cache creek at the far end, probably around 2pm. Also recommend against any hard luggage unless it's the indestructible metal ADV stuff; soft bags are best, and plastic will literally crack open/explode on impact...ask me how I know...:wtf If you're on a smaller bike with limited range, bring a syphon hose, as most of us on the big adv bikes will have gas to spare.

@ John and Michael - per above, my best guess as to when we will be at the cutoff--let us know your plans re when you expect to be departing Buck Island (and which way you're headed) and we will be on the look out--would be great to meet up with you guys!

Disclaimer: this is not an organized ride, there are no sweeps nor medical services, cell service is spotty, ride your own ride, be responsible, and please practice proper social distancing and mask wearing.

Looking forward to the ride on Sunday; been way too long since I did this ride and I'm jonesing for some dirt time on the big vstrom :ride:cool

Awesome Tim! Good info in your post ^^

We have some drizzle this am in SF... If it does rain it gets sloppy, real sloppy..

The pic above is on Reiff right about the turn off to Buck Island. The mud caked up so bad our wheels wouldn't turn without enough momentum..

Hey Tim, :wave

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday! :thumbup

think what I'll do is get up and break camp in a lazy fashion on Sunday and try to be up at the intersection of Buck Island/Rayhouse at 12:30-ish on 10/11/2020, and hang out and wait for you guys at the intersection, and then head towards Hwy 16 if we don't see you at the intersection by 1:30pm or so.

Think that way you can catch us up on the way to Cache Creek gas if you're still behind us ...

here is a link to my SPOT device, which is working for me right now. I may not have it set up correctly for the public to see, let me know if it isn't working and I can try to get Cary to help me find a link that works ...

if the SPOT link is working you should be able to see if we at least made it to Buck Island on Saturday night, and where we are if you have cell service somewhere on Sunday ... :ride

Hi John --
That sounds perfect!...ditto on meeting up with you guys, and if the latest forecasts hold there should be no rain :thumbup

Enjoy your Saturday night camping; if I wasn't so backed up with work and house stuff I would be out there with you guys; your plan with the seasoned steak and cast iron frypan sounds just about right :bbq:hail

Just an FYI, I rode 128 to the coast today and there were 3 traffic controls between the Berryesse dam and the corner of 121/128 that added up to over a 40 minute delay. Lots of crews and heavy equipment cleaning up debris alongside the roads.
Weather was fantastic today, should be a great weekend for a ride/camp trip.

next time camping, for sure ... we’ll see about cooking, all I usually do is boil water ... :rolleyes

see you soon!

My Noob friend backed out so I'll meet up at the Mercury Cafe at 9a tomorrow.

think Kalle is out, too ... bananachunks will be there and my friend James I’m guessing is 50/50. Cincinnatus says he’ll meet us in Cordilla *$, and wheel_muse ...

see you tomorrow morning!

thanks for the intel, Mooncat ... guess there’s a small chance they’ll take the weekend off, but probably not. maybe there’s only one traffic control between Turtle Rock and 121/128? we’ll see, I suppose ... :party

Fun times today for sure! I showed up at Cordelia at 10:15am and met wheel muse and a couple guys on crf250l's. Our group rode up to Knoxville and turned on to the dirt. I went ahead of the group and ended up at the north entrance to the Knoxville area for a little bit. The rest of the group eventually made it there and it seems that one of the guys lost a piece of equipment on the trail, so I went back and did the loop a second time to look for it, but with no luck.

FOR THE SUNDAY GROUP: If you guys do the Knoxville loop please look for a black bag with a moto bike jack, just passed the camp ground and the little cement bridge where the road goes uphill. WE think it might have been left behind there, or it could have fallen off the bike after that somewhere. Anyway, please look for it if you can. THANKS!

After that we continued on to Reiff Rd and on to Buck Island. Super fun time and great spot to camp. I had dinner plans with Mrs1962 so after hanging out for a few mins I had to hightail it back to civilization. Made it back just in time to not get in trouble so all is good. I was pretty whooped from the days ride so flaked on my Cow MTn ride tomorrow. Sorry guys! Looking forward to seeing the pics and hearing the fish stories!

Doh! I fell in behind blue vstrom and klr (on 128), thinking definitely BARF guys, they'll lead the way. Nope. 30 miles of gas gone and 45 minutes later, I was back on Knoxville road and all hopes of meeting up with y'all were dashed. But because of y'all I did explore a new to me region of my back yard and even got my toes dirty at Knoxville (jeep trail?), so big thanks for getting me out of bed. And John I was hoping you could try the WR today, next time I suppose.

Oh man, I saw a 1090 go by and a bike or two were not far behind when I was unloading my bike and gearing up at the abandoned gas station at 121/128. I was maybe 10 minutes behind:( I had fun, but bummed I wasted so much fuel and had to turn back at the end of that jeep trail. I need a bigger tank! Glad you guys had a good time and looking forward to the pics.
