Paging Doc Wong...

Oh, welcome! I presume you have a bunch of seat time on other bikes before you got that big boy. Do tell.

congratulations on the GS, California is a wonderful place to explore once off the paved roads (on the paved roads, too). :thumbup

Isn't Cincinnatus still an adventure newbie with his GS?

Personally, I think you would be better off finding an experienced adventure rider to help you learn. If I were still in the area I would volunteer. :)

Check out the adventure forum. Seems like several people have posted looking for folks to ride with. Maybe the Berryessa Knoxville ride will start happening again.

I'm a dirt newb too. Just got my Multistrada dirty for the first time today. Hopefully Doc Wong does an ADV clinic soon...in the meantime, I've been watching a bunch of Bret Tkacks videos on YouTube.

I've ridden with quite a few others on adventure bikes and some are going to be faster than me and some slower. It's rare when we're all the same speed. It's just part of the ride for the faster guys to wait every once in a while for the slower guys. And I'm much happier to wait for someone than to have to go back and help pick them up from a crash or something.

Find some mellow fire roads and get the feel of loose dirt before adventuring into any advanced dirt. GS handle great, but 500 plus pounds will get out of hand easily.

That. Friends wait for friends. No Problem.

I've got Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires. They were new on the bike when I bought it and so far, I like them. Like the others have said, don't worry about your pace. You've got to ride YOUR ride. I got my bike dirty for the first time yesterday on La Gloria Rd. with StromTrooper and another guy. They were both great to ride with.

+1 here. I ride my FJR on fire roads and some loose stuff with ADV guys and agree some are faster than me some are not but we all wait cause the alternative sucks if someone crashes. Plus we talk about realistic paces and make sure we do not join a group well above our experience or if we do they all understand the expectations. Glad to have you join the fun!
