I like Eddie Huang on Vice but I've never read the book. There's bound to be some controversy (most likely from Asians) about this show but I'm already laughing.

What say ye mah ninjas?

I really like eddie on vice but the show looks par for the course of most primetime TV and by that I mean it looks terrible.

It is racist.

Chinese are cheap?

Chinese hate white people?

Chinese co-opt black culture?

If you can get by the made-up stereotypes, the show seems very original and funny.

Eddie's book is good. Talks about his life growing up an asian kid in an American world. He kind of came up like a thug and had a lot of black/hip hop influence in his life. But then he also had to "conform" with his chinese family. Alot of his book/his schtick has to do with food and stereotypes, so I'm not surprised at the angle of this show. As a fellow asian, I enjoyed the book and related to alot of his stories with stories of my own.

I'll give the show a watch.

Fear me!
reading his bio...went to law school->law firm, laid off->stand up comic + drug dealer->Taiwanese bun shop->T.V.

Dang, his parents must have no hair left :laughing. I find it appropriate that the network carrying this show is ABC :D.

This is coming from a 1/4 chinese guy so I'm qualified to say this...

Chinese are cheap?

Some are. Just ask any person that works in the service or tourist industry. :laughing

Chinese hate white people?

Some do. Ask any Chinese girl who is dating a white guy about her parent's reaction. :laughing

Chinese co-opt black culture?

Some do. As a matter of fact my best friend (Chinese) through my high school years was exactly like that kid in the trailer. :laughing

I guess what I'm saying is there's a grain of truth in there. Are all Chinese like that? Of course not.

I give it 2 seasons.

I don't know. I read this article comparing it Margaret Cho's show, and it points out the many flaws.

If the show's target audience was just whites (or blacks), it is going to fail. But the theme that Asians can cross racial boundaries without resentment is critical. Take this image:

A white kid co-opting ghetto culture would not be as well received.

I think there is an interest by non-Asians in how Asians do things, and the show's performers do remind me of Malcolm in the Middle, average dad, wild mom, lead son with strong and weak brothers. If the wackiness appeals to TV audiences, it could be on for a while.
