Hey Everyone,

One of my favorite Bay Area motorcycle traditions is the Easter Sunday ride. You get up in the middle of the night and head up to the summit of Mount Tam in the west to catch the sunrise near the start of spring.

This ride is the kinder and gentler version - :laughing :ride :laughing. No early mornings required. We'll be heading to the top of Mount Diablo to catch the sunset right before the autumnal equinox - the start of fall. We get to wave goodbye to the last day of summer before the leaves change, pumpkin spice lattes fill the local Starbucks, and a crispness returns to the air.

The view from the top of Mount Diablo is nothing short of amazing. You see the ocean in the west, the Sierras in the east, the wine country to the north, and the Valley to the south!*. I'm always blown away how awesome the color and view is from the summit. To seal the deal the change in color heading down the mountain gets better and better with each turn.

Here are the details:
Where: Oak Grove Valero, Walnut Creek (Oak Grove and Ygnacio Valley)
When: September 22nd, 2018 - 5pm KSU at 5:15.
Route: https://goo.gl/maps/c2iikN5E7TC2. We will be going North Gate Road in case Google renders otherwise.
Weather: Diablo is almost 4,000 ft - it's likely going to be cooler. Check the temps here.
Notes: There is a $10 fee to get into the park. It's for a good cause! Sunset is at 7:05pm The park will shoe us off the hill shortly thereafter.

I'll have some hot water for (instant)coffee and tea for those that would like a warm beverage at the top of the mountain.

After sunset, we'll head back down the mountain as the park shuts down when the lights go out. If folks are interested, we can grab dinner or coffee after. I expect us back in Walnut Creek about 7:45-8:00.

*Assuming good weather, the right winds, and minimal pollution. Your results may vary as past performance isn't indicative of future results. The ride up, however, is always fun.

I'll share some pics from last year:

Is this route ok for new-ish riders? Probably the twistiest road I have been on and am good with is Calaveras. Would just be slower on those hairpins. Might know a friend who wants to come, too.

I won’t say the ride is beginner unfriendly, but you do have tight hairpins on the road. The key thing is that it’s going to be twilight to dark on the way down. If you’ve not had a lot of night experience that may be disorienting.

If you are nervous, give it a ride mid week. There is usually no one there.

True, didn't think about lighting. I haven't done many darker rides and the lack of light on twisty roads kind of scares me. Might get more practice on easier roads in the twilight/dark before giving this a shot then. Have fun y'all

Yo Boss,

Thread title says September 22nd, but the details in the body says September 23rd.

I'm assuming you're talking about Sunday, September 22nd.

I am planning to meet for this ride. Been anticipating it for a month now, and it will be a great little trip with everyone! Thanks for putting this together.

Public service announcement: there is a $10 fee to get into the park. Since we will have a number of bikes, Exact change with a $10 bill makes it easy for you, the people behind you, and the park!
