3 Weeks in Baja California Sur

My buddy and I have been going to baja, both separately and together, on and off for over 20 years now. Its primarily a windsurfing destination for us, though I usually bring my XR400 along as well. This year my buddy had a KLR250 that he got from his dad, and we both had our sons along, so we figured we’d get some good riding in between sailing sessions.

My son and I drove down from the Bay Area. We left on a Friday and planned to rendezvous with my buddy at around noon on Saturday in San Diego. I was carrying my bike on the back of my 4Runner on one of those $99 Cycle Gear carriers.

Halfway down the 101, in stop and go traffic, one of the straps holding the bike came loose, and the handlebar exploded the rear window out. Great start to a vacation, right? If you look closely at the photo above, that's a motorcycle cover wedged into the cargo door of the 4Runner to keep the wind down.

The rest of the trip to SD was uneventful, and we spent the night in a KOA as close to the border as possible. The next morning we woke up, I got on the phone, located a window repair place about a mile away, and drove over. By the time my buddy and his son showed up at noon, we had a new window in. Of course the cargo door wouldn't open any more, but i was able to fix that once we got down to Baja.

My buddy was already pulling a trailer with a sailboat, so he pulled the forks off his KLR 250 and stuffed it into his suburban. Along with a ton of other stuff.

I’m not even going to try explaining these photos. Let’s just say it involved a poker run, drinking, large rafts, and kites.

My buddy is not an experienced rider, and the loop to Los Barriles along the old coast road was a bit of a challenge in spots.
Turned out to be a long day

Leo... I am surprised we have run into each other at Pablos! I'm a long time windsurfer and have spent a lot of time in La Ventana. I believe I recognize a couple of folks in the picture. :teeth

I had no idea! Its been 4 years since we've been in LV - high school soccer is in the winter and I had to abandon my younger son and wife to make it down this year. First time I haven't stayed in the campground. I'm sure we have some mutual friends - Don & Maureen? Cookie?

Know the bad news about the mine road being closed?

You mean camp BC.... seems like everyone in the campground is from BC :rofl Havent heard about mine road. Its going on two years, meant to be there before the holidays for a month but had a change of plans. I usually negotiate a long term rate with Joe as I am there for 4-6 week at a time. Will be there again this coming winter. I like going Nov-Dec and back for Tahoe. I am actually positive we know some of the same folks... and could tell some great stories probably not suitable for a public forum. :thumbup

It looks like you had a great time and your photos are great! Did you have any random mystery tracks for this trip? :rofl

I especially like the photo of you hauling ass and jumping in the stream.

Of course, I didn't have my GPS with me all the time.

Love the bike in the back of the SUV...priceless. :thumbup

Yeah, it was a pretty brilliant idea. I was trying to talk him into getting a hitch to carry the bike on the front of the car, then he suggested sticking it inside. Once we talked through the ease of removing the front wheel and fork it was a no-brainer. I came up with the idea of lifting the bike into the suburban and taking the forks off from there. Much easier than removing the fork before putting the bike in the vehicle.

Saw your post on ADV, made me think the military checkpoints could have been ALOT of fun, though they usually don't seem to bother USA folks too much - I have heard an eyewitness account of a whole bus being unloaded and every bag being searched.

Most were pretty quick affairs. One, however, made us open all doors/windows/rocketboxes/boardbags/etc. Still, didn't take more than 15 minutes so we can't complain. One bus (filled with Mexican citizens) was there a LONG time.

Hi Leo,

Great stuff, love the Old Coast Road pics! :thumbup
I'll have to get down there someday ... :party

see you around the campfire,

You would absolutely love it John. Gorgeous, desolate, varied terrain, good food and virtually no fences. What more could you want?
