My buddy and I have been going to baja, both separately and together, on and off for over 20 years now. Its primarily a windsurfing destination for us, though I usually bring my XR400 along as well. This year my buddy had a KLR250 that he got from his dad, and we both had our sons along, so we figured we’d get some good riding in between sailing sessions.
My son and I drove down from the Bay Area. We left on a Friday and planned to rendezvous with my buddy at around noon on Saturday in San Diego. I was carrying my bike on the back of my 4Runner on one of those $99 Cycle Gear carriers.
Halfway down the 101, in stop and go traffic, one of the straps holding the bike came loose, and the handlebar exploded the rear window out. Great start to a vacation, right? If you look closely at the photo above, that's a motorcycle cover wedged into the cargo door of the 4Runner to keep the wind down.
The rest of the trip to SD was uneventful, and we spent the night in a KOA as close to the border as possible. The next morning we woke up, I got on the phone, located a window repair place about a mile away, and drove over. By the time my buddy and his son showed up at noon, we had a new window in. Of course the cargo door wouldn't open any more, but i was able to fix that once we got down to Baja.

My buddy was already pulling a trailer with a sailboat, so he pulled the forks off his KLR 250 and stuffed it into his suburban. Along with a ton of other stuff.
Putting the bike back together.

Putting the boat trailer to good use gathering wood for a bonfire
I’m not even going to try explaining these photos. Let’s just say it involved a poker run, drinking, large rafts, and kites.
