2008 Tacoma with replaced Clutch and transmission: Yay or Nay?

So there is this 2008 v6 TRD SR5 access cab with manual transmission and 136,000 miles for sale in my 'hood for $14 grand. However I found that its clutch was replaced two years back and it had transmission work done as well. The truck meets the expectation of what a 11 year old vehicle should look like but has no major dents etc. I plan on putting a lot of freeway miles on that truck this year.

Haven't never bought a truck before, what would be a reasonable price to pay for it?

They are pure cult vehicles.
They are better than Nissan's Frontier but not 5 times the money better.
Same thing for 4Runner/Pathfinder.
I don't get it either.....and I work for Toyota.

Jeez how hard were they shifting or beating that thing to have transmission work done? I'd be happier around 8-10. If there wasn't a history of a trans issue. Clutch is about the right mileage I would say 12-14 if it's 4wd

What would be a good price to pay for it then?

Not a 4wd. On the test drive, I felt the 3rd gear wasn't catching properly. I'm going to take $5k off their asking. Don't know if this will fly but worth a try as it has been sitting on the dealership lot for 23 days.

Holy shit, $14k for 2WD?!

At 11 years old and well over 100k miles, a clutch replacement wouldn't be overly concerning.

It it's really not shifting into 3rd correctly, I would be concerned that either the clutch or "trans work", whatever that is, wasn't done correctly.

Might pass all together.

No clue.....I fix them, I don't sell them. I'm just constantly blown away at the money those things command.
Look at a Nissan Frontier. They are truly under rated trucks and you can probly buy a nice little house for yourself with the money you have left over.

Thanks for breaking me out of my Tacoma-trance. I called and let them know that a transmission work raises a big question mark but they were unwilling to reduce the asking price. I guess they are willing to wait it out to see if someone picks it up near their asking price. I told the sales guy to keep in touch. They won't get much if this truck goes to auction.

I agree with the other post how about new , Your going to pay for the miles either way , if not new , buy used but take your time and wait for a original owner , they are hard to find because the the good ones are sold word of mouth to a neighbor or relative . Beware of dealers the cars often may come for auctions , because they do not get enough trade ins and the auctions keep the volume up. But often they are junk. look at 10 to 20 or more ,you may find one good one and you may not and have to look at more .

The price sounds too high to me but I am not surprised about the clutch. If you live in this congested area and have a manual, and get stuck in traffic a lot, you will burn through clutches. Ms BA, against my objections, purchased a manual Subaru years ago and has used to commute and make multiple trips to SF etc. The smell of hot clutch is something I am well aware of and I think she is due for a second replacement of same.
People buy vehicles they think they are gonna use for certain things, but just end up in traffic like the rest of us.

My 01 Ford Ranger was totaled right before last Xmas by a texting teen that rear ended me. I was having no luck finding another one (2wd,4 cyl with a 5 speed), so I looked at other options. I definitely liked the Frontiers, but ended up finding a very clean 08 Tacoma Prerunner access cab with the 4 cyl and a 5 speed with 138K miles. Paid 10k and that wasn't much more than most of the Frontiers in similar condition and trim. That Ranger was the most reliable little truck I have ever owned. It had the DOHC Mazda built engine. Had 238K when I was hit and was running perfect. The Tacoma is much roomier inside and is much quieter. I'm hoping it proves as reliable as the ranger did!
