2003 VStrom 1k 118k on the odo - what to do?

Hey Collective Wisdom of BARF:

I've decided that it's time for my V-Strom 1000 to find a new home. The bike's got 118k on the clock. I've added luggage, custom windscreen, PowerCommander 3, and center stand. Tires and drive chain is new from Doug at Santa Clear Cycle. Cosmetically the bike is in good shape and has always been garaged. This community has been good to me and the VStrom over the last 15 years. The bike has a small fork leak and a small backfire on hard deceleration. No oil leaks and it does not burn oil that I know.

I'm not looking to get every cent I could from it. I'd like to get some opinion on what the best way is to pay it forward here. I know a bike at 10,000 miles is "high mileage" much less than 100,000. I'd like the bike to go to a good home somehow. I know the Cars for Kids (and similar programs) likely nets out a $500 tax deduction, but I'd rather it go to something other than the auction block.

Thoughts?

Dan

exploring!
I recently gave my old high mileage GS to someone who needed a bike and was mechanically handy. I'd post a free to good home ad and get someone who can bring her to her full glory to adopt her.

If he advertises free everyone will want it. How does he weed out the guys who can't bring it to full glory from those who can.

List it for the KBB value or a little less if you're in a hurry to get rid of it.

Sure but doesn't seem fair to tell poor smuck you can't have this free bike cause I want to give it to rich guy over there with a garage full of tools.

I'd give you $500 for it as a Dirtbag donor candidate, but be aware, I'd be taking a sawzall and welder to it and would be aiming to leave no plastic trim on the bike at all... going for kind of a naked Mad Max look, something you might see at Wasteland Weekend or the like. A cross between a V-Strom and a Confederate Hellcat that's been stolen and rattle-canned. Rear tire just hanging out there with a little hugger fender, seat ending after the rider's ass, maybe a little exhaust can under the swingarm with a diamond plate skidplate over it, etc. All rebar/angle iron/used sprockets and scrap steel aesthetic. Front fender from a couple of sprockets welded to diamond plate rough-hammered to form.

Giving you the detail so you know I'm not pipe-dreaming on the build, but it won't be the same bike at all. If your goal is to give someone this thing to ride 100k more miles on, that's entirely possible, and I'd commend you for doing so and setting up someone with bike needs for the next 10+ years of riding. (Those motors, if maintained, will run a loooooong time.) Definitely do that instead. If, in April, you decide you want me to hack on the thing, I'm up for it. :)

keep an eye out on BARF for the right recipient. my guess is that the right person will stand out, maybe someone who lost a bike to theft, accident or other mishap.

My opinion is that person should be an experienced rider, considering the Strom is hardly a beginner's bike.

Whatever that means
I know someone that could use a moto. They have no form of transportation currently. They are a barfer but don't post anymore. Unicornpower. He has a bike but it's not running and his car got totaled, being unemployed doesn't give him a big budget to take care of those things.

Undetermined
I know someone who could use this. He would cherish it for some time as he does his 87 BMW with 200K miles.

Looks glorious already to me, could just be the yellow. Ask for an essay on why they deserve the bike. Or take referrals such as above.

im here for the 4'oclock free bike giveaway.

honestly, just bronze the bike and build a stone pedestal for it in your backyard. that many miles had to have come with some serious memories.

I'd prob. put a price tag I'd be willing to let it go at and see what types of bites I get.

I'd prob. want to give it to someone who knows a thing or two about wrenching instead of a newbie or someone who has no mechanical knowledge.

Could also be leverage if you were looking to buy a bike privately as a trade + cash for owners who have N+1 bikes in their stalls and wants to try something new.

Good on you for wanting to give back to the community.

Seems a pity to have it torn down by a dirtbag builder or a dismantler who buys it from a charity auction.

Seems better to me to sell for a price that benefits you and the buyer, while giving a nice donation to Budman.
