I replaced the thermostat and bled the air from the cooling system, no check engine lights... Any ideas people?

Haven't noticed any power reduction, have noticed fuel economy reduction, went to smog it today and it was 3% too high on HC so I have to do something about it, (worth a mention that about a month ago, it was running too hot, replaced the water pump, the radiator had an almost unmentionable leak at the top, jb welded it, added coolant, but when prior to fixing it, it ran at 3/4 temp for about 300 miles and had almost no coolant in it. Just a bit of history. The compression is good, runs fine now, just a little cold. I replaced the sensor and it went up in temp about 3 dashes, so now it's a bit above the 1st 1/4 line.

Mother of God.
Maybe it's running rich. That'll cool the charge, cool the combustion products, and lead to lower heat output. The increased hydrocarbon output seems to back up this hypothesis, but without knowing more about the exhaust characteristics of this particular vehicle at this particular age and mileage, it's just speculation.

Like I said, it MIGHT be running rich.

Get a new T stat. Make sure it's the right heat range. You might have a defective or Erin range stat.

Did you use a 190* thermostat ?
Is the fan clutch working properly ?
Did you use low grade fuel ? (Octane produces HC, use 87 instead of 91)

Someone probably thought the same about your avatar at one time, maybe it's a good work truck for him :dunno

He didn't mention he was trying to pass smog-just that it was running on the cool side. At this point in the trucks life longevity is not on the top of the list of things to strive for.

thermostat accurate?

if you're trying to pass smog. just block air flow to the radiator. I would let it idle for 15 min + while waiting to be smogged.

what is: too cool

getting hot air from the vents? if not, t-stat is defective. not many ways you can cool a metal object thats continuously being bombarded with explosions.

RE-smogged it today, failed HC by 1 point, 40 I got 41. The guy that smogged my car revved the shit out of it when switching gears, grinded my reverse and stalled when re parking it.

A rough tech can cause a car to fail. You need to get the CAT hot as shit before the test.

the smog tech at the place right of of 280 on Saratoga is really good. He's a rider too-always has bikes in the shop. Only problem is I think his GF is a CU member LOL
